Well, we will be their largest acquisition, most everything else has been pretty small in comparison, but to give some google fodder, they bought out Cocos Bakery.

Looks like Cocos Bakery (never heard of it) has been kicked around several times the last few years.  San Antonio must be waiving taxes or something because the current owners sure don't have much of a physical presence there.  Oh well, another one to add to the 'weird companies in San Antonio' list alongside that multinational cult compound.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the support!

Is that the place where the old men were marrying the children or is this something else?

Eh, it was some odd woman run ostensibly christian thing.  They had an unmarked road going back to their compound that was guarded by an off duty police officer 24/7.  Very secure fencing.  Got around the cop once by cutting through some brush and there was a big locked gate with their logo on it and nothing else.  Couldn't really see much from the gate.

Members were expected to spend at least a week a year at the compound.  They used to house a bunch of African kids there but have since moved that operation to another state.

Who knows... maybe it was some run of the mill 'spread the gospel' thing but it felt very secretive out there.

Yeah, hard to say when they live in a guarded fort. Those "other" groups are out there.

When my wife was a teen, she got roped into some camping trip run by a "Bible study group", it turned out to be pretty culty. The first night around a campfire she was asked to share some of her views. They didn't meet up with their specific views, so the group leader started loudly wailing and crying, between sobs she said she was crying in sorrow because her soul was damned forever for not accepting their groups beliefs. Immediately everyone else in the group stopped being nice, openly shunned her and told she was a horrible person unless joined them and agreed to their "code of virtues".

People like that give true meaning to the word hypocrite.  Preaching the idea to accept  others but only if it falls into a preset idea that they have.   :banghead:

Why I'm not chuffing along anymore on my renovations:

The contractor that was supposed to replace the main support beam holding up my house has flaked.
Not much has been accomplished in the past month since I can't refinish the floors or hang doors until the beam is done.
And I can't set up furniture or organize rooms until the floors are done.
I know...first world problems, but living in an empty, partially renovated house (indefinitely) sucks.
I've been working with a new contractor, but I get the feeling it's a bit over their head and they might flake too.

The contractors so far keep wanting the structural engineer to allow them to take shortcuts to get the job done faster (using air nailers instead of specialty lag bolts, etc).
Hell I've gone over what needs done so much that I'm fairly confident I could do it myself.  I'd have to lay out the money for a bunch of temporary posts I'd only use once though and then there's the fact that if I mess up and the house implodes, homeowners insurance wouldn't cover it.
Hopefully the people I'm working with now can get it done next month.

Well religion is the opium of the masses.  The only difference between a cult and regular religion is the intensity of their actions.  Just for fun google the Marx quote and you'll find dozens of right wing bloggers trying to re-write history by saying Marx didn't mean it that way.  ;)

He was. He was at this school when it opened in '71 and was here for 40 years. He was in good shape and really enjoyed retirement. It's a big loss.

The Sheetz by my house is closing.
Proximity to a Sheetz was one of my considerations for buying this house.  :hissy:
There is one a couple miles away, but it's just not going to be the same.

Ok, I had to Google Sheetz.

I figured anyone not from the northeast would have to.  ;D  I think they did open one in California recently.
They adopted the touchscreen ordering process early, like late 80's early 90's.
You can get just about whatever food you want, customized however you want 24/7...and it's pretty good.

I also buy my gas there and use the ATM there regularly.
This location was just so damn convenient for me.

Yeah, I guess I forget how small their actual footprint is because they are so friggin' ubiquitous everywhere I've lived  (WV, VA, PA).
Just in the last 6 or 7 years, they've built 3 or 4 new ones where I live now.

They are closing my particular store because it's small, outdated, & there is another one just 2 miles up the road.

Come to Texas and admire our Buc-ee's.  The upscale "truck stop" that doesn't sell diesel or have driveways big enough for an 18 wheeler to navigate.  But, hey, 120 unleaded pumps per location.

They love putting them on the other side of the highway from famous gas stations that have been there for decades.  I'm watching Waller County Line BBQ and Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse slowly wither away....

I actually miss shopping at HEB

I have very, very mixed feelings on HEB.  They pretty much took over the grocery business in San Antonio, which I could forgive, BUT they only open locations on land that they own.  And they never sell their land.  When they decide they want to open a larger one, they just shut down the old one, and move down the road.  They refuse to lease out the old locations to competitors, so they end up empty or with crap like LA Fitness or some crossfit thing.  There are large sections of that city that are blighted food deserts now.

Their slant towards Texas products is a mixed bag, too.  It starts off great, and then they decide to get exclusive contracts with the producers, and then they drop the quality.

I can't buy shrimp off the boat in my family's home town anymore because all the local shrimpers are locked into HEB contracts and get perks for snitching on each other.  In other towns they own and operate their own fleets of boats.  Thanks to BP it's impossible to get a feel on the shrimp market price, but I've got a feeling it's going to march steadily upward soon.

On the other hand, they employ significant numbers of handicapped people and are generally a pleasant shopping experience.

Meh.

Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave, will you hold my hand?

Oh, won't you stay with me?
 'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see
 But darling, stay with me

 Why am I so emotional?
No, it's not a good look, gain some self-control
And deep down I know this never works
But you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt

Oh, won't you stay with me?
 'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see
 But darling, stay with me

No I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down
No I'll stand my ground
Won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground

Kurt Cobain already did that for you. Well, not the time travel bit.

If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Ah, ---fudgesicle--- it...

Your cruel device,
 Your blood like ice.
 One look could kill,
 My pain, your thrill.

I wanna love you, but I better not touch (don't touch)
I wanna hold you, but my senses tell me to stop
I wanna kiss you, but I want it too much (too much)
I wanna taste you, but your lips are venomous poison

You're poison runnin through my veins
You're poison, I don't wanna break these chains.

 Your mouth, so hot
 Your web, I'm caught
 Your skin, so wet
 Black lace on sweat

I hear you callin and it's needles and pins (and pins)
I wanna hurt you just to hear you screaming my name
Don't wanna touch you, but you're under my skin (deep in)
I wanna kiss you, but your lips are venomous poison

You're poison runnin through my veins
You're poison, I don't wanna break these chains
 Poison

Tom Petty is a national treasure, as was Kurt Cobain.  The fact that you don't like them explains a whole lot.

So, if one were to approach one of your buffets with the intention of ensuring that the establishment lost money - what is the best plan of attack?

I generally avoid beverages, starches, and chicken.  I look for medium or bigger shrimp, and only large pieces of pork or beef that aren't ground.

Pretty much. Any of the meats that are hand cut are spendier. Roast beef, steak, etc and our "featured" entrees like prime rib orbutterfly shrimp. Anything in single serving containers has added cost as well. The easist way to get your money's worth is to get grab what is expensive, eat a couple bites and get a new plate every couple minutes.

I'm morbidly obese and cheap, but not an ---uvula---.
