Anyone in UK with a CNC Machine?
« on: March 20, 2015, 05:55:13 pm »
Greetings,

I haven't been around here much as I have found another hobby, Well actually I sort of fell into it when trying to give up Cigarettes and took up vaping.  Anyway I have gathered a bunch of kit up and its starting to clutter the place up.  So I decided to have a look for a stand for everything to go into.  I found some I like but I am not paying what they want, not when I can build my own :)

I really like the look of J Wraps Millenium falcon but that would be a little difficult,  their batman themed one though simples.

I'm hoping I can find someone in the UK who can cut the symbol for me so I can use it as a template, (I don't need the holes cutting in it either as I may want to adjust where they go). The size is approx 12 x 7. If anyone can help let me know also let me know what format the file for cutting would need to be in. Thanks.

I have unlimited access to a CNC and am on vacay this week. Stateside but can ship. What material and how thick do you want it? Do you want two pieces or a single sheet with the yellow recessed?

If MDF is okay at that size it would be free plus shipping.

As you are talking my language (Cat), I can't really turn down that offer now can I.  Nice to see someone stateside willing to assist UK    Whatever material works best for you as long as the bearing of a copy bit can be ran along then it will be fine. As for what I would actually want. That would be 2 pieces, the black oval and the bat.  Just those 2 will allow me to create the stand in any number of different configurations :)  As I said I don't need the holes cutting as those may be moved about

Let me know what the cost is for shipping, I would guestimate it will be about $15-20

Scale is inches yes? A foot wide right?

Just checking so I don't waste your time and send you the wrong size.

The full size image that you see when clicked on is scaled to 300DPI, whatever that comes in at is the correct size,
I think the full image including dead space at the sides is just over 13"

Thanks again.

OK it is slightly larger then I thought, The oval is 3960 give or take 5 pixels so 13.2" at widest point.

It will be 13.2 then - I'll post up some pics once I get it cut.  .5" MDF is what you're getting unless you need otherwise.  That should be fine for template work.

I decided to try a bit of freehand routing and create a proof of concept.  It seems to work quite well, but I do need to find a 15mm forstner bit as my 13 is too small and the 17 is too large :(  But the 26mm and 30mm sized holes are perfect for bottles and mods. Best of all total cost to me £1.50p and about 2 hours. 50p was what I paid for some offcuts of marine ply to test with and i used about £1 worth of yellow carbon fibre.  All in all a sucessful sunday afternoon.

Do you still want me to cut you one?  If you place the holes I can do those too.

Yes please, Mine is a little rough in places to say the least :)  As for the holes, No I'm still not fully set on the locations for them and as I have a set of forstners I can easiliy put them in.  I also just realised I got the yellow and black the wrong way round in my POC  :banghead:

Being my usual lazy self I haven't updated this thread.  I'll deal with that now.   Well a little while after the last post the template arrived :)

I waited until the bank holiday weekend and then went to work on it.  First I used the outer ring to create the base shape,  I decided against inlaying

I then routed out the Bat symbol itself,  Not a perfect job but I dont have a small 3/4 pattern bit (I will order one at some point).

Here are the 2 of them together for the first time

I then drilled out all the holes for the Atties and Mods,  I decided to put a small round on the edge of these due to a bit of chipping on the laminate,  If I do this again I will do holes but not the outer edge of the symbol.

I wrapped the Base in Yellow Carbon Fibre and Cut the respective holes,  So nearly there

And lastly I sprayed the Symbol with primer and then a couple of coats of Black. Put some Yellow T-mold around the base and then  I then put Felt into all of the holes and underneath the Bat symbol.

So there we have it,  1 home made vaping kit stand.  I will be making a few more stands, but those are going to be so much more simple due to the shape and size of the wood that I have for those,  Basic rectangles 3" thick x 3" wide by 9" Long Mahogany strips.

Once again thanks to Le Chuck without whom this would have proved a lot harder to complete.

Similar but on a much smaller scale :)  Whilst not medically proven I believe it to be the best hope for people looking to get off of Cigarettes.  Firstly it provides the much needed Nicotine that most smokers are addicted to. At the same time it provides all the visible signs of having inhaled and exhaled aforementioned nicotine whilst giving you something to hold in your hand instead of your cigarettes :)  I also like the DIY'ing aspect of it all,  Roll your own coils, Make your own Eliquids, Even make your own box mods if you are that way inclined.  It's a shame that so much of it will be clamped down on via higher Taxation, legislation and the like.
