Hyperspin 2
« on: March 26, 2015, 11:08:00 am »
Never gonna happen, right?
Hyperspin its by far the best front end for me, and you know it is as most front end try to mimic it by copy theyr artwork and try to make it look alike hyperspin. Ive been waiting on hyperspin 2 especially for the auto vertical suport, as i love cocktail cabs alot. Anyway my point is:
Does anyone knows what really happens? probably too much preasure to BBB?  maybe he lost interest ?
Talking about hyperspin 2 in the Hyperspin forums would be a "IT WILL COME OUT WHEN THE TIME COMES RIGHT" so that why im posting here , to hear opinions....

Having gone through 2 weeks of programming school online, I feel qualified to answer this.

If the principal programmers have not been able to make this into a product that supports paying full time wages, I wouldn't expect updates on any regular schedule.

Also, he might be up against a technical challenge that his is still working out, most likely in his spare time.

I too hope it comes out, but I certainly wouldn't bother to speculate about something I know nothing about nor would any opinions matter to me. However, according to BBB, he is still working on it:

Hyperspin 2.0 has been a work in progress since at least 2010. You already answered your own question. Don't hold your breath.

I don't think most front ends try to mimic hyperspin either. Most front ends are text list based.

What is auto verticle support? Maybe we can point you in the right direction to get the functionality you need.

Some individuals may use the artwork on a different FE but that's different than saying most FEs use the artwork from hyperspin.  Can you please link to all these FEs that are using the hyperspin art?  Off the top of my head Attract-Mode, HTML5 FE, MALA, Maximus, and every other one I've downloaded (and that's a fairly extensive list) don't come with any "hyperspin" art installed.

I think its cool you're clearly all about the FE, I just don't know if it's a fair assumption to put that on all the other FE designers out there.

Big Blue has vertical monitor support without stretching the previews at all.  :burgerking:

Cocktail support for a frontend is kind of tricky, because you'd essentially have to let the players choose to "give up" control of the game selection so someone on another side of the cabinet can control it.

When you say "mimic Hyperspin" I can't help but remind you of Ultracade. So when you say "mimic Hyperspin" you probably should be saying "mimic Ultracade".

The new GameEx Evo has support for rendering Hyperspin themes. AFAIK it's the only FE that can render their native format without conversion. Either way it's just a feature and not something that will define it as a FE. Also we will not be supplying HS media as we don't believe in distributing other peoples assets without permission.

PS GameEx already has a "split screen" vertical cocktail mode so either player can operate the FE.

You are 100 % correct, i totally forgot hyperspin was a mockup of ultracade, i remember the first time i saw an ultracada, i felt in love with it, too bad it got into a bad thing, as the way i see'it it could create an alternative OS for mame hobiest like us. Anyway i use to be a customer of Gameex, it was a great alternative for a media player plus a front end, i might take a look at it too see whats new. Thanks for the info.

I've never used hyperspin.

Is it really flash based?

Yeah and some themes have swf files in them.  I'd be suprised if GameEx Evo can support those.
The themes otherwise are fairly simple, just an xml file putting images and stuff at x, y coordinates and some animations.

Most HS themes don't have swf's but either way GameEx Evo does support swf rendering.

Here is a video of Evo's new engine rendering a HS theme containing several swf objects.

It's written in C# and uses SlimDX but some components I wrote using C++/CLI such as the swf and video renderer.

What library do you use for parsing/displaying swf files? I tried libswf and others but they were painfully slow. Plus it couldn't do stuff like skip to frame x of a .swf and stop.

Old, but not obsolete.

I rolled my own swf parser/renderer based on zflash which uses the Flash.ocx. Instead of rendering to a bitmap buffer I render directly to a memory texture. I've extensively expanded on it to include input support, script communication and frame control etc. The interface to do this is exposed via the ActiveX object definition header (zflash_flash.h).
