New Multicade Project
« on: March 15, 2015, 09:26:46 pm »
Hi guys.  Although this is my first post, I have been a long time "lurker".  From what I have learned on these forums, it have inspired me to start a project of my own.

Cabinet
3/4" AC fir
Heavy duty casters

Control Panel
4 players with 7 buttons each
4 - MagStik plus joysticks
1 - Magstik set on the diagonal for QBert
1 - 3" trackball
2 - spinners
Pinball buttons on the side of the control panel

Monitor
40" LCD monitor

I have made pretty good progress.  I've completed the following:

Cabinet build
Paint
Control panel install
Marquee and cover

Still to do:

Computer build and setup
Wire the control panel
Paint CNC parts

Here are some images of the progess:

Cabinet rough-in Completed

CNC milled vent cover

CNC milled subwoofer port cover

CNC milled coin door with reject buttons

Current state of project

As I enter the final, difficult stages of the project, I am bound to hit some snags, but I am really happy with how smooth things have gone.  I will post some updates as I make more progress.  I'm bound to need help sooner or later.

If your going four player and your using a widescreen monitor, then the scale works nicely. Love the CNC items, really bespoke. Good work...

*drool...

Nice work!  It's a beast in terms of size, but you seem to be filling up the horizontal real estate just fine with 7 buttons/player.  I'm assuming you are going to be doing some emulators, in addition to MAME.  Be sure to properly setup analog sticks if you do N64.

Thank guys.  I am kind of figuring out as I go.

I would like to run just about any emulator I can as well as a jukebox.

How does the widescreen do on the traditional arcade games?

How does the widescreen do on the traditional arcade games?

If your not a picky purist, they look fine, just don't stretch anything. If you don't like seeing a whole bunch of empty black screen, you can use some bezel art like this http://www.jammaplus.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=62800&title=mame-virtual-cab-widescreen-artwork. Actually, I was searching for traditional bezel art like you can find here -->http://mrdo.mameworld.info/index.php, and stumbled on the virtual cab widescreen artwork on jammaplus.co.uk and they would work fantastic on your 40" TV as they were designed for 1920 x 1080 and the lay file shrinks the actual game screen making it at little less "In your face" while playing...they look pretty cool.

For those who don't want to click Jamma link...

I have a 32" widescreen, and the MAME stuff looks great (not stretched - there are black bars on the sides).  I use software emulated scanlines - they look pretty close to the real thing, at a glance.  A 40" will be fine, as long as you don't stretch the image.  Gameboy will look absolutely horrid on a screen that big - trust me... (but there's nothing you can do, those games were designed for a very small, very crappy display).

If you are looking to have a lot of emulator support, consider putting USB ports within easy reach, for USB controllers of the system you're emulating.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this comes together, keep up the good work!

Thanks a lot, those look great.

I'm not that hung up on scan lines.  I have a Tapper and 720 (you can kind of see them in the first picture), I get plenty of authenticity with those.

Just got done with building my computer tonight.  I get in a habit of trying to do too many things at once though.  Between wiring the control board, painting the CNC pieces and working on the computer, I have my hands full.

Let me think about the coin door file, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it.  Once I'm done painting, I'll see how it comes out.  I can do almost any style, number of players, dimensions, logo, etc...  Is there a market for custom faux 3D coin doors?  Not sure, but everyone I've shown it to has been blown away by it.

re: coin door.

Your coin door looks neat.

The world wants a coin door alternative.  Even more so, a working one.  I mean instead of the cnc'd lock, a hole to put a cam lock.  Same for the buttons. A real hinge to open the door...

Not that it'd be secure, but it's for home use, not on location.

A CNC platform sounds magical.

I got you, thanks for the advice.  Once I get this thing up and running, I'll do some design work and see what I can come up with.

Cnc work looks amazing. I like the 1up!

As far as the cnc fake coin door... I don't get it. I bought my real coin door used for $40. You can buy it new for $100. :dunno

I think the answer here is "Because cnc."

I would "print" things I didn't need.

Is there a market for cnc wood coin doors?  *shrug*
