I want another shot. That cab you linked turned out great. My Asteroids cab is the one that I tanked, sanded, and painted black. Not a total loss. Quote from: Louis Tully on October 30, 2014, 07:31:42 pmAfter having a really bad time trying to stain the sides, the cab is now black. I was really bummed. The patterns on the board I picked would've looked amazing. After google fu-ing for a while, I think I figured out what I did wrong and what I couldn't control.2 things:1 - I should've used a conditioner on this stuff. The other cab I stained turned out great. It was oak though. This is birch.2 - For some reason, I wasn't able to maintain a wet edge. By the time I got a quick coat on the side and moved back to the top to smooth things out, the same way I always paint, it was tacky and the overlapping passes were basically a second layer. It was spotty and jacked the ---fudgesicle--- up right away. The more I tried to blend and even out the pile, the worse it got. I waited and sanded as best I could and just painted it all black.I was using a stain/poly blend and I was outside, in direct sunlight on a pretty warm day. Not sure if that would cause any problems. For the above linked cab, I painted inside with the same stain/poly blend and it turned out great. It was oak though. For this Kaboom! cab, I'm going to try using regular stain. It'll be a first for me. I'm staying away from birch too.

Just make sure if you stain use minwax, I think it works best. I use this for the finish:http://www.amazon.com/Minwax-33055-Fast-Drying-Polyurethane-Semi-Gloss/dp/B000M2XXBO/ref=sr_1_1/181-4295736-6467247?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1422574631&sr=1-1&keywords=minwax+sprayI'm no expert but if you want it to not have blemishes, don't screw the sides just glue them and use those cheap angle braces to hold it together till the glue dries. That spray is the bomb. you can't hardly mess it up.It just didn't make sense to me that I had great results the first time and it was ---smurfy--- the second time. I didn't apply it differently. Painted the oak indoors and painted the birch outside in the sun. I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to this stuff. Painting and the like are my weakest areas. This is the stuff I used. Thought this time around, I'd try just plain old stain. Not poly mix. And do lots of testing before going near the cab.

I was poking around the Mad Bomber site the other day and saw that they've also made an updated version of Circus. I remember playing this when I was a kid. I downloaded it and checked it out and it's the same file setup as Mad Bomber. Here's how they've updated it. And here's it is after a few edits. I reused my numbers from the Kaboom! edit and killed all the background stuff. Much easier to see what the hell is going on with the black background. It's a great remake. They did a good job. I think I'll have this on the cab as a hidden game. Button on the back to launch or something. Maybe I can make a cartridge for this one too and have them actually trigger a script that launches the game when it's inserted into the cab? It worked well for the guy who made Gameman, the 3 foot tall fully functioning Gameboy. Worth a shot. Edit: And I'm finished. Text, numbers, and images are finished. Scripts are written and it's ready to go.
