Extron VSC 300 and Component output?
« on: July 02, 2014, 05:55:14 pm »
I just purchased an Extron VSC 300 off of ebay so I can use my new Video Card (Geforce GT 610) on my CRT tv. I used to run it through my videocard natively with a Svideo output and that worked fine until the card crapped out.  I didn't know how much of a pain in the ass it is to get a modern video card to play nice with a tube tv. Anyways, my tv has component input and I finally bought the Extron because it was around the same price as all the other transcoders but this one seemed better (more options and outputs) for $50

so I look at the manual and it says it does component out but I can't figure out what BNC connectors i should connect. Here's the diagram http://www.extron.com/product/product.aspx?id=vsc300&subtype=39 and I don't know which outputs = component. these RGB connections are foreign to me, can anybody help me out figuring out how to get a component out on this sucker?

Im guessing its the Y-R -> Pr...... Y-B ->Pb......... Y ->Y?

Acid, it's not really so terrible getting a modern PC on a 15kHz tube.  Did you take a look at CVS287 clones with an adapter cable?  That's maybe $60-70 including the parts for the cable.

A VSC 300 won't work very well for native res MAME.  I think you'll just be feeding it 480p and the output to the TV will be locked at 240p@60Hz.  Among other things, you won't be able to match native refresh rates, which is important.  That thing is better suited for getting 240p out of modern game consoles which aren't capable of it natively.

Im guessing its the Y-R -> Pr...... Y-B ->Pb......... Y ->Y?

That's correct.

I was just reading up on the VSC.  I had forgotten that it doesn't even do 240p, it's stuck at 480i.  You'd need an Extron RGB interface in the chain to get it from 480i finally to 240p.  Without that, you'll not only be locked to 60Hz, you'll have interlace flicker, no scanlines, etc.  Will it look awful?  Well it won't be unplayable, but you won't be getting anywhere to close to potential of your TV.

What is your TV by the way?

Anyhow, I don't see why you're stuck with it.  Something like that keeps its value.  It could be resold on eBay.

good point, maybe i can see how it fares and resell it if I don't like it. TV is just a pawn shop tv that i found that powers on after power failure and keeps the same input. decased it so i dont even remember what brand it is.. standard SDTV. I just want all my emulators and PC games to look good on the sucker.

Does it have adjustment pots on the chassis or is it a digital chassis?  If it's the latter you're going to need to figure out what model it is so you can get into the service menu and set up your geometry.

Those are for purity/convergence.  Don't touch 'em if your convergence is ok now.

Anyhow, yeah there's probably no pots on the board because it has a digital service menu for adjustments.  You need to figure out what model it is so you can get into that, otherwise you won't be able to set your geometry up.
