Used Table Saw
« on: October 29, 2013, 08:21:11 pm »
Bought a used 10" Ryobi table saw last night for $50. Turned it into a 3' by 5' cabinet saw today. Used 2- 8'  2x4s and a 3x5 piece of 3/4 plywood. a 4x4 for legs (the long side had a 1/4 inch droop to it.).

I had this plan to get started on a polycarbonate bending device but instead I finished cleaning the garage. Boring huh?

A couple things.  That's a contractor saw, not a cabinet saw.  No amount of side table/outfeed/fencing system will ever make it into a cabinet saw.  Cabinet saws are 1k+ for a reason.  They are built with die-cast metal to be heavy as hell and are belt driven monsters.  They can rip 8x4 sheet goods and not even tip slightly.  I had that same Ryobi and I used it for 8 years and it served me well.  I did however notice a crazy difference once I got my hybrid saw.  With that Ryobi you will have to "Push" wood through, which makes it dangerous.  Get a new blade right away, Freud Diablo are nice blades readily available and moderately cheap.  Also, put your guard back on period.  That saw doesn't come with a riving knife, which is crazy stupid, so that guard is the ONLY defense you have against kickback.  It's not as great as a riving knife but it's better than nothing.

I'm sorry if the above comes across as me being a jerk but I'm concerned for your safety.  Unless you're this old house good, that table saw is a dangerous purchase.

Watching Tommy on a table saw freaks me out.  He is literally "this old house good" but still his fingers get awfully close to the guard-less blade sometimes.

This is the video I always go back to.  His finger is less than an inch from the blade.  Just wow.

Thank you for the concern and no I'm not "this old house" good. I will come up with some type of guard before going much further.

He slowly retrieves the riving from his tool chest and installs it carefully back onto his saw and thanks kahlid for potentially saving one of his digies. My wife yelped out load when I showed her the video, holy frigg.

I saw a guy do that, except he was cutting ceramic tile while chugging a 80/20 rum and coke with the other.  At 10am.  One of those rare moments where I think I felt my heart actually stop momentarily.

And that video is one of the many reason my woodshop is outfitted with a Sawstop. While the saw will not stop kickbacks it will stop me from cutting off a finger.
Measure once, cut twice and burn the evidence.

The SawStop is a genius device.

And the guy who invented it is a crook with how much he wants for it.  I mean you're talking $1,000+ over a comparable saw.

I love the concept of the Sawstop.  I DON'T like the concept of over $1500.  I realize that replacing a $1500 saw is better than an amputation, but still...  Yikes.  I wish there was a retro-fit kit to add the capability to an existing saw.

Talked to the head safety guy at work about Sawstop (I build 4 billion dollar coal burning powerplants) and He said He seen a demonstration in St Luis where a guy used his own finger instead of the hot dog.

Yeap, I've seen the demo at a woodcraft store.  What's cooler is the guy had 4 blade stops with him and asked if anyone wanted to try.  Guess who did, THIS GUY.  It shaved probably 2 layers of skin off my pinky's top.  I did it because I was always afraid of power tools growing up.  My dad was never into wood working at all so when I started my first arcade cabinet, I built it all with a Dremel and a Jig saw.  I was super afraid of the table saw.  I'm not afraid any more.

Bottom line is this, I've said for a long time I believe the Router is the most dangerous tool we use but the table saw is honestly just as dangerous.  Don't ever rush and use the safety mechanism's the manufacturer gives you.  It's about building arcade machines, not losing fingers/hands.

I cant believe the liability in having a bystander intentionally push their finger into a rotating blade.
I've seen the demo live (with a hot dog) but still would never consider volunteering to use your own finger.
You got some big ones!

They're probably tiny but made of titanium

+1 on your router comment.  I've cut my finger pretty seriously on a table saw but have absolutely no fear working with one.  Respect yes but fear no.  However I just tried using a pattern bit on a router table for the first time and it scared the crap out of me.   Holy cow is that nuts.
