NES Home Arcade cabinet?
« on: November 17, 2003, 01:16:01 pm »
I was walking down the main street of my old home town and a cabinet caught my eye.  It was in the front of a closed down store that looked basically like a giant junk receptacle.  Anyway, I looked at the control panel, and it had an 8-way stick and 2 buttons per player.  I'm like "what game was this!?" then i notice the area for the monitor... it's a shelf, for a Television!  So I look a little closer, and it says (brand name here) Home Arcade.  Well, I figure since it's a "Home Arcade" and has 2 buttons per player it's gotta be for Nintendo 8-bit.

Anybody know what this thing is?  I've done some google searches but have found nothing.  :(

The Nintendo 8bit arcade hardware is called Playchoice, although how you link the 2 buttons Home Arcade and has to be Nintendo is beyond me  :P

2 buttons, Home Arcade AND a TV shelf.  There are very few videogame systems that are made to hook to a TV and use two buttons per player.  It pretty much limits it to NES or Sega Master System.

It seems like a high priced toy for the kid who had everything.  It was definitely built for home use.  I'm gonna find out who owns it and offer 20 bucks for it.

They used to sell them at Toys R Us. They were $199 back when I was ten years old (1987). They kind of remind me of the X-Arcade cabinet, except that they kind of sort of actually resemble an arcade cabinet.

They also made a Sega Master System version.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I was in a class the other night and the Prof was talking about Internet law etc.  He posed the question to the class, "When was the first time you used the Internet?"

When the answers died down the earliest use was around 1993-94.  He asked, "anyone else?"  I slowly raised my hand as I winced wishing I had just let it go.  He asked, "When was the first time YOU used the Internet and how?"

I replied, "Around 1982-83, on a Commodore 64."

A hush fell over the room.

And then...salvation.  The Prof exclaims, "DUDE!  I had a Commodore!"

Remeber the tape cassette drive...Yea!  I had one of those...OO, OO what about the modem with the big suction cups that you stuck the reciever into????  No Way, I totally forgot!  Bruce Lee...You had that too!  No Way!  WAY!

As though he had not made me feel good enough at that point, if there was any lingering feeling on my part of being the freak in class, (I could still hear people around me mumbling, "Man there wasn't any Internet back then....was there?") he topped it all off by asking...

"Who here remembers ATARI?"

Total Silence......I think I drew a tear. :'(

The Prof and me chatted it up and compared high scores on various games for another few min leaving everyone else in the room totally stupified.

But then again, after the dust cleared, I was still the old man in the class...such a burden when your only 34.  Yeesh.  Little whipper snapers.  Punk kids! >:( ;)

Florida. Until '83 you could drink there at 18, then they passed a law that raised it to 21. The way the law was written the age went up a year every year till it was at 21, where it's been ever since. The law went into effect on september 1st, so everyone who was born after that day had to wait while those of us born before it didn't. I was born middle of august, my friend was born september 4th so every year the drinking age went up 3 days before he was legal. ;)

Yup, same deal in Wisconsin although that was a tad before my drinking time, (just a tad).  My brother and sister were weekend cheezeheads as the border was only 20min away.  (we were in Ill)

On Wednsday nights I am one of the adult leaders for our churches teen group. It regularly makes me feel incredibly old. Both because of the teenagers, and because of the other (mostly in their 30s and 40s) leaders who treat me like a peer.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Wow, I feel fairly young for once.  I was 7 in 1987 and in first/second grade.  Practically any of the consoles (with a few exceptions) that were made before the Genesis/SNES era used two button setups.  I vaguely remember Toys R' Us offering that type of setup and thinking how cool it would be to have one.  Of course, at that point I was still playing on an Atari 2600 (my parents finally got us an NES for Christmas of 1988 when our Atari finally died).
