Nasty MK2/3 cab cleanup/mame conversion
« on: July 25, 2013, 04:25:07 pm »
Hey there,

The thread title sucks, but I didn't know where else to start a thread like this.  I picked up a nasty MK2/MK3 cab from Craigslist over the weekend, and wanted to document my efforts to clean it up and convert it to a mame cab.  So, here are the initial pics of the grimy (and poop covered!) cabinet.

I assume that the PCB in there is the game itself.  I have no idea if it works, but are there any tests I can run to see if it does? I would just like to sell it, and anything else in the cab that people might want. The marquee art is really the only part of it that isn't scratched or pooped on, think anyone might want that?

Guess I could try in the Buy/Sell/Trade section.

Where do you live? Im sure someone has a JAMMA cab you can test it in. I'd consider it, but I bought a "working" UMK3 with juggernaught hack for $70 and when I got it it was a non working UMK3 with version 1.0 roms on it. Unless you wanna send it to me for next to nothing :)

Hopefully you can remove that paint and find some nice Raiden side art (the character not the game)

I live in the central valley, in California.  I know this makes me unpopular with some people on these boards, but I was considering removing the MK3 sticker and putting a fresh coat of paint on the cab, not stripping it.  ???

How much is next to nothing? Do you want me to post some detailed pics of the board? I really don't care about getting any real money out of it, just don't need it and would like to help someone out if they can use it.

I need a functioning board so I can try to convert it to Open Ice OR put the juggy hack on it so I can have both UMK3 and UMK3-J and easily switch between the 2. Next to nothing would be "a little more than the cost to ship it", I mean if it works I'll send ya some extra but if it doesnt I'll eat the loss.

Thanks, man! I just took a look at your project, and that paint job is outstanding! I'll be snagging that paint at my Home Depot for sure.

thank you! I am very pleased with the paint job on the cab, it's VERY durable and looks flawless. If you need a hand with anything don't be afraid to ask! I'm only a few cities away.

Oh, also I have a Jamma cab, it's a shooter but I think it would still work none the less if you wanted me to see if that board boots up..

Got the MK3 art off with a heat gun and Goo Gone. First time using a heat gun, I almost melted the cab at first!

Also decased the Sony 27", but too afraid to discharge it, yet! Not sure if it will fit, either.  It's very deep.

Don't be afraid to discharge, it's super simple and very easy to do safely.

Good vid, not me, and you don't need one of those specialty tools, you need a screwdriver, a wire, and some tape.  Tape one exposed end of the wire to the metal of the screwdriver and affix the other to the frame of the set, make sure you aren't touching the set, and slide the screwdriver in until you hit metal.  Easy peasy!

If you cant figure out a way to measure, just hold the TV shell up to the side of the cab to figure out if it fits. I had a 32" CRT mounted vertically in a KI2 cab, and it fit with an inch to spare.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=97260.0

Also fit a 27" CRT in a Pole Position cab :)

it had less than a 1/4" to spare but it fit!

The tube in an MK is 25" so I don't see why a 27 woudln't fit.

So in regards to painting this, it looks like the original MK2 art is underneath this black vinyl? Is it likely vinyl? Laminate? It doesn't feel hard like laminate, but more stretchy like vinyl.

Either way, can I paint over this? I want to just fill in the chips and holes and give it a fresh coat of paint without sanding/stripping.

Is that feasible?
