2p SNES, dreamcast, or n64 game for 9 yo birthday party.
« on: February 27, 2013, 01:04:56 am »
My son wants to have a retro gaming party for is 9th.  I have horizontal and Tate mame cabs and a Wii on an LCD.  I recently picked up a bunch of consoles and have a spare 25" CRT I want yo hook up.  I'm looking for a good 2 player game for the party I can pic up on eBay or whatever for less than $30.  Any suggestions?

The games I have and like are not kids party games other than maybe Dreamcast marine fishing but it isn't two players at the same time bit is super fun with the fishing rod controller.
I am thinking SNES, dreamcast, or n64.  I have a ps2, ps1, game cube, Xbox, x360, gc, and nes too if you have other ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Personally I would go with the Dreamcast.  But as this is a party for 9 Year old's the N64 has to win hands down.  4 Player goodness on Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing.  ISS64 & Mario Tennis are also pretty good.

Seems like the Mario Party games would be a good choice.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Thanks for the suggestions!

I don't have a ton of games other than some shmups. I started picking up consoles to compare the video and controllers on the real deal to the video and controller converters on my emulator setups.

I think Mario party 9 will be running on the wii.  Mario Kart and Diddy racing on the 64 would fit the bill.  I'll do some research on the other suggestions and let y'all know what I do.

Thanks again!

I just realized that Smash Bros. hasn't been mentioned yet; one of the most fun 4-player games, and not over-complicated for young kids.  The N64 and Gamecube games would be preferable to the one on the Wii.

not sure where you live, but I'd be happy to lend you some carts, all you need to do is ship them back when you're done with them (I'll cover shipping to you)

Thanks for the loan offer Malenko!
I'm in Denver.  I think I'll go ahead and buy whatever I decide to go with so I can play with my kids longer term.

I think I've settled on going with the n64 and picking up a fourth controller.  I never owned one when they were current gen but rented one with mario 64 for long enough that I could have probably bought one.  I used to play Golden Eye at my buddies house too.

I haven't let my kids play fighting games (Street fighter/ MK type) or remotely realistic shooters yet so golden eye is out.  I'll try Smash Bros again (haven't played it in years) and see if it it tame enough to expose a bunch of 7/8 year olds to.  I don't want even more protective parents than me calling and bitching.
Mario party seems like a good option too if I put a different franchise on the wii like NSMB.

Anyone have thoughts on:
-- Super Smash Bros. or Super Smash Bros. Melee?
-- Mario Party or Mario Party 2 or Mario Party 3?

Thanks again for the awesome feedback!  My son is enjoying watching the youtube videos of the games that were recommended as I review them.

Melee has a lot more characters, stages, and play modes, so there's much more replay value, but the original is simpler, and could be better for a party with young kids.  I think they're both dirt cheap anyway though.

The violence is on the level of Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry cartoons or something like that.  You'd think no one should be offended, but some people are nuts.

The fact that both are  simplistic fighting games (No crazy long combos or juggling for a 50+ hit combo) make either a good choice, because no party is complete without a fighting game ; however, I prefer Melee. The original Smash brothers is simplistic, sure, but is lacking in how many stages / characters there are. Also only having one analog stick is kinda a bummer for the original as well.  Melee has enough characters and stage combinations to keep anyone entertained for a long time. Both don't have a complicated menu setup or complicated moves. Sure, the original may be simpler just because there is less buttons. But Melee accommodates in the fairness category  pretty well for the people who smash the "A" button, and those who know what they are doing, ensuring it is fun for everyone.

*Note - The original is rated "E" while Melee is rated "T". I have played both and both are as rCadeGaming said "The violence is on the level of Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry cartoons or something like that". Just the ratings are something to keep in mind with other parents.

I understand the whole violence thing with the little one's but with tv's, cells, internet, everywhere and of course friends house's that more then likely have all of the above there already more exposed to that then you could imagine unless there kept home under lock and key these day's.

it's hard to find current games on 360 and ps3 that dont swear every other sentence.

bond on 64 aint got nothing by today's language/violence standards and we all played it for endless hours when we were young so I am not fooling anyone there if I said I never played a game like that when I was younger or been to a friends house that never had it lol.

I can honostly say I have never ever seen a kid get carded for any game at any rental store I have ever been around.

never had a friend or a younger one tell me they were carded or denied for renting or buying anything game related either.

not trying to knock anyone for keeping that stuff away from the young one's either and totally respect that  but at the same time to me no video game or movies never made any life changing decisions other then am I going to cut the grass today or play a game all day.

Probably being a wowser, but is Goldeneye such a good idea for nine year olds? Yes, the graphics aren't exactly cutting edge now, but the idea seems a bit mature...

Turn off all weapons and make it happy slaps only, although that could possibly be a worse idea with a bunch of 9 year olds  :lol

Went with GameCube Smash bros played on Wii for component video.  Thanks for the suggestions, we had a great time!
For the first time I really wished I had a 4p cab too.
