Confused Bartop??? - Plus Extras
« on: November 30, 2012, 01:49:45 pm »
Apparently Sacramento likes that two player I built. Have several requests to produce more bartops. One 2-player, and two one players. This will be the home thread for the One Players.

Might be kind of redundant since I have made this design before but I like pictures so I am documenting this one too. Pretty much only difference in the one-player bartop is that it is of a higher quality wood than usual and will have CP art.

Purchased a 4' x 8' slab of MDF and had it cut in half. Also raided the scrap section of Home Depot while I was there.

Template piece from before, traced

Rounded corners courtesy of one American penny

MDF chunks to make the side blanks

All pieces cut out with jigsaw very roughly on the outside of the lines to be cleaned up with flush trim router bit

A ton of dust kicked up from making these pieces

Not sure what to do with these pieces that were the negative of the side panels.......perhaps eagle stencil?

Anyways, have a ton of laptops from a trade to be the brains of these projects

I promise to make these of much higher quality than my "cheap arse bartop" collection. Already ordered 60ft of t-molding, a ton of thick black board vinyl, little tid bits too like multiple usb powered pc amps, switches, etc......

Going to just focus on these two until I figure the dimensions for the two-player one again

Frame supports

Two sets of side panels

Beauty shots

Screen mounted on one

Speaker panel added

Got a lot done in 24 hours, will continue some more tonight or tomorrow morning.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks chucky  :D

I plan on doing something different but people keep asking me for these so I am not going to redesign anything yet. Got some nice moneys from these things, next is to donate something to MalaFE and the MAME project. Without these there wouldn't be much of anything, okay there would be nothing at all.

Made up this, figure I can make one for each bartop I build from now on. Not bad price either for a ten pack of full sheet Clear Avery Sticker paper.

The text is not set in stone, thought about putting my last name on there or my repair business name. Not sure yet, but I got a ton of aluminum sheeting in the garage to use.

Your woodworking skills are definitely improving and at this rate you'll have all three finished in time for Christmas.

Oh and by the way I may just borrow the shield idea from your previous build.

Routed for t-molding and put a test piece in. Also rounded the edge of the top piece so it doesn't stick out anymore.

Rough paint to hide any imperfections after vinyl

USB controllers came in and acquired an i-pac for the 2-player

So why did you buy a 2 player ipac and then 2 joypads?

Making two single player bartops and a two player. The i-pac was free (well part of a trade) and will be for a two player.

Hi,

nice project!

If I use 2 controllers for a 2 players bartop, Will I have any problem or lag? Should I buy an iPAC or I can use the 2 controllers?

Thanks!

Most would say buy an i-pac. But I have always used game controllers, around $3.75 a piece from hong kong. Then I use "joytokey" to map the button presses to keyboard characters. Joytokey remembers the unique id of the gamecontroller so as not to mix them up when one is removed or issues with an impoper shutdown of the system.

Also, Thanks!

Rain got into the garage, so waiting for it to drain a bit, got the landlord coming to check it out later. For now I am editing some serial plates to go on the future bartops and my full size.

Street fighter cab that is taking precedence in this thread

Used PS to tweak a street fighter logo so it is white. This will show up as clear when printed and hopefully will look awesome as aluminum

Hi,
do you know if a 4:3 19'' monitor would fit in your design?
Can you share your plans?

Thanks!

Yea a monitor like this would fit if it has relatively thin boards on the back.

I don't really have plans, something I did freehand. I have wanted to input my side panels into Illustrator but can't for the life of me get the curves inputted right. If someone wants to help I would gladly share what comes out of it. After the side panels are cut I measure the width of the monitor and add a half inch on each side for the overall width (not including side panels). Then the rest is rather easy, all the rest of the pieces are the same width that fit in-between the side panels. And I measure them on the spot. Control panel usually ends up being around 5" in height. I can do some proper measuring if you wish. I got time  8)

If you can supply me with some measurements and a photo taken at a straight angle (preferably with thecamera zoomed in as much as possible to prevent lens distortion) I can work it out for you if you'd like.  Just drop me pm.

On topic: making good progress!  Am curious about the two player version as well.

Decased the speakers, nice little mini amp

Getting speaker panel ready

Hacked up the gamepad - did this twice, one for this build and one for the minecraft build

Drilling holes and routing out the back panel for the main power\volume controls

Everything fits, just waiting for the paint to dry

- Boot Logo -

Flush trimmed the acrylic to fit the control panel and drilled through it for the buttons

Printed the serial plate

Now to wait for the clear coat to dry

Okay, so about the aluminum I used.... :-\

I couldn't cut the sheet I had in the garage, was too thick. Every time I cut a piece the edges were too serrated, need something else to cut it with.

So what I ended up doing was using soda cans, properly cleaned of course and only the best (A&W) soda. They are curved which is annoying, but was easily solved with a clothing iron. Properly flat after that, gives it the aluminum look and feel and looks amazing. Glad that KLOVER posted that video all them days ago

Thank you gnobar! If anybody wants one I can make them a serial plate (that is if you even like mine), only reason I offer it is because they are so light the postage would just be a stamp to send it out.
