TV for Ps2 and Dreamcast Light Gun games
« on: November 09, 2012, 02:53:45 pm »
Hello,

I want to build a Light gun cabinet, but only using a big screen TV, Ps2, and Dreamcast.

Then I'll make a gun stand 4-5 feet away from it, and create a box around the TV with a marquee.

My question is though, what big screen old TVs will work with the light guns of Ps2 and Dreamcast.  Tube?  Rear projection?  I don't remember what I used to use.  I'm looking at something like this. http://cnj.craigslist.org/app/3393741371.html

Now the answer to this depends on the gun you get.  If you have original Dreamcast or PS2 guns then no a rear projection tv will not work. If you get lightguns that use IR Sensors (Similar to Wii controllers) then you can use any kind of screen as it relies on the IR signal and not any particular point on the screen. I only know of IR Guns for the PS3 & PC, so if you are emulating then you would be fine.

To make it simple  Standard old school light guns will only work with CRT's

Only standard definition CRT and make sure it doesn't have any fancy built in processing (line doubler or progressive scan)
I have a 36" Sony HD CRT that I picked up to use with light guns and can't because the built in line doubler can't be turned off.

There used to be standard definition CRT projection TVs back in the day that would work, but it's highly unlikely you'd find one that would work.  They weren't that reliable and are expensive to fix.  They also usually had the built in processing that screws light guns up.

If I were you, I'd look for a basic model 36" tube tv on craigslist or ebay.
If you hold out, you can probably find one for free.

I actually already have a 30 inch CRT and a 25 inch CRT.  Even in a TV stand with wheels that would work perfectly.  If none of the giant 40-60 inch old giant TVs will work than I'll just go with what I have and not pay anything extra.

And I'm going to use the Ps2 Guncons,  I don't like the tracking Ps3 Wii stuff that much, its too slow.  Although I did have a lot of gun with Ghost Squad and that Link crossbow game.

You can certainly find 30-40 inch standard definition CRT's on Craigslist.  They would be very nice for your setup; but be warned, you will need at least three people to move one!
