Vertical vs horizontal size question...
« on: November 04, 2012, 11:07:24 am »
Hey Guys,

I built a horizontal Mame cab using a 25" Citizen CRT TV (it turns on when you feed power, it has S-video, remembers input and basically has a built in bezel). I am completely satisfied with the picture and as I am now putting together a dedicated vertical Mame cab I searched and found another one of these TV's for $20 but it is the 27" model. My question is, should I go ahead and build the vertical cab with the 27" or would it look more correct to replace the 25" from the horizontal cab with the 27" and use the 25" for the new vertical build. I have been testing some shmups and Mala set to vertical on a spare 25" that I have sitting around (can't use this one in a cab as it will not remember input after power loss) and it feels "large" to me. I have a feeling a 27" TV for vertical games will actually look kind of silly. It is not a hard job for me to switch the TV's, just thought I would get your guys opinion.

Thanks....

personally i dont like anything larger than 20" for vertical games, because otherwise it is too difficult to see the entire screen at once (because it is too tall), so you have to keep looking up and down the screen all the time (ie. when playing it's too much eyes up, eyes down, eyes up... etc). it's nicer to see the whole screen at once.. so you can play the games better with more skill, instead of having to look around the screen all the time.

in the arcades in the past it was rare to see a vertical game on anything larger than a 19"/20" screen...  :blah:

everything beyond 25 inch ( a59 tube , 59 cm visible area ) as standard cabinet monitor is nonsens for vert. gaming , no matter if its lowres , vga or hdmi input . u ll get the best performence and most fun out of 20-21 inch a48-51 tubes or smaller ( like in cocktail cabinets ) . i ve got a sega naomi with a quality toshiba tube vertical setup here and i really hate it . if i could find a fitting 25 inch bezel i wouldnt hesitate a second and replace it with a 25 inch vga tv . lowres classic arcade 15 k games are even worse. i sold my new astro city cabinet with a perfect condition nanao/toshiba screen coz the lowres picture couldnt compete with a 10 euro tv set because its oversized .
