slot width in mm for 3/4 t molding
« on: October 29, 2012, 03:48:48 pm »
Im in the middle of my first building and I have a potential disaster looming

I am using 18mm MDF. The tmolding website says a 1/16 inch slot cutter for 3/4 inch t molding . 1/16 inch is 1.58mm so I bought a 1.5mm slot cutter and cut the edges of the cabinet. However I now have a sample of the t molding and it does not want to go into that slot. I havent given it a wack yet but even pushing by hand the edges of the MDf seem like they are going to cave in.

Anyone especially in europe , how wide are your slots??

I found this.

http://www.gamemolding.com/products/102-t-molding_slot_cutter.aspx

Its .08". This equals to 2.032 mm

This t molding fits into the slot cut by the bit above

http://www.gamemolding.com/products/106-arcade_t-molding_black_chrome.aspx

The t molding is .0938". This equals 2.383 mm.

Hope this helps

John

Take a scrap of wood, cut a slot, and use a rubber mallet to tap a piece of the molding in to see what happens.

No worries sockgoblin. Two things you can do...1st, flip your cab sides over and route them again on the opposite side, this will not only ensure your slot is dead center, but might also remove enough material for your T-molding to fit. 2nd, if you find it is still too tight, reduce your slot cutter depth ever so slightly (we are talking micro-meters here, so be careful) and route both sides again. Rinse and repeat until T-molding fits snug (just for reference, I have never been able to push my T-molding in by hand, it always requires a couple of good taps with a rubber mallet. You really want it as tight as possible without deforming the molding or damaging the MDF). If you have some scrap material, experiment on it before you try it on your cab (don't use little 2" x 3" scraps for testing as the T-molding will actually cause pieces this small to seperate when you hammer them in). What ever you do, don't cut your slot too wide :hissy:or you will :timebomb: take your time, good luck :applaud:

phew

crisis averted. turns out the sample of T moulding i was using to test my slot ( oh er) had a thicker spline than those generally available in uk resellers. (I used a piece from a controller box I had bought .) I bought a bag of sample colours from Arcade world uk via ebay and they fit a treat.

so to clarify in case I have set doubts in the mind of other newbies, the 1,5mm slot cutter  is Ok for 3/4 inch t molding
