As much as I hate live blogging sports games... what the hell was up with the official throwing his hat at the Cowboys receiver?

I haven't seen it but usually an official throws his hat down when a WR runs out of bound (not pushed by a defender) and then comes back in.  He's ineligible to be the first player to touch the ball.

The other reason an official throws his/her hat is when they've already thrown there flag and they want to mark another penalty.

Either of those happen?

OP updated.  Let me know if I missed anything.

Good luck to PBJ and Andy in the finals.  Looks like we may have a Round 2 coming up soon.

Hrm... I think we ought to pick different games this week or it could be the two of us for awhile.  I'll let Andy have first pick and then choose another game so we can speed this along.

I'm taking a safe bet this week. 49ers over Vikings.
That's what half of us thought last week when we picked the Patriots.

....sigh....   :banghead:

Well, looking forward to round 2.

Thanks, agreed.  I also think we should switch off who gets first pick each week.
I'll go with Week 4: Houston over Tennessee

Not that I expect it to happen, but what's the standard protocol if both guys pick incorrectly?  They both pick again the following week?

It's been a crazy 3 weeks so far in the NFL and there are no signs of it changing right now.

We tie for first and split the $100 cash prize, I believe.

So what do we do if we get one right and the other wrong?

Every year I wonder more and more if the fix is in with football.  I certainly can't take professional basketball seriously any more.  These replacement refs just seem completely inept at their point shaving....

Here's the hat thing I've been grousing about:

Crappy camera angles so I couldn't see what WR they said went out of bounds.  I've never seen a player slip on a hat before.

secondary game, as in if both of your first picks win (or both lose) the second game decides.

Dude, the refs throw their hats all the time.  It's just weird that he stepped on it exactly when he was trying to change direction.  A ref might throw his hat ten times a game depending on which ref it is.

Looked to me like he was going to call some sort of pass interference and threw his hat to mark it.  NFL refs don't usually do that but who knows what level ref that guy was a month ago?

Got that right. What a a load of crap that was. If throwing a hat under a players cleat is bad,  what does that make awarding the catch to the wrong guy in the game determining hail Mary pass at the end of the game?  I am pretty livid right now.  These refs have to go.

How is this worse than Ed Hochuli botching that Chargers/Broncos game a couple years ago?

Well, the fact that it can be compared to what a lot of people call the worst Ref call in NFL history already speaks volumes. (At least worst if you think the tuck rule call is justifiable).

I would say that there are a couple differences here that make this call worse. First, San Diego screw up was not a scoring play. They were given a bad call, but at least the chargers had further opportunity to stop the Broncos from scoring, granted it was in the final minutes. The Packer game was a situation where the Packers were winning, and on the absolute final play of the game, the refs awards a touchdown to a guy who who didn't catch the ball. Tate even pushed off another player to be in on the jump.

The second difference I see is that this falls on the entire referee group. The Ed Hochuli call was one ref who was accountable. He was demoted after that game. This game, all the replacement refs footlocker employees the NFL hired were clueless. One ref got the call right and didn't bother to speak up. They shouldn't have even made a defining call until reviewing the play, because they knew their initial decision was not reversible in this case.

The tuck rule call was right.  Can't blame a weird rule on the people enforcing it.  It was an awkward and stupid rule but it was applied correctly when it happened.  I view that as an officiating win.  All replays show they got the rule called properly in real time and in review.

I agree. It was a case where the rule sucked, and the fact that it was previously unenforced that made it dumb, not the refs that enforced the rule. To me, the tuck rule signified the point in NFL history where the rules officially became a hindrance to the game. The league mentality was to base game play on technicalities. Right now, it feels like watching an NBA game. Players are looking for a penalty call after practically every play. Not to mention that due to rule changes, the QB is treated like a hemophiliac and the run game is dying. Next year, they will probably be attaching velcro flags to each players' hips.

Well, this year, it's the physical pass defenses that are winning.  Look at who the surprise teams are.  They're bump and run defenses.  This year it's more like grab and molest.  Finesse timing offenses, like New England, are completely disrupted because backfield coverages are grabbing so much more than the last couple of years.  This is absolutely a result of the difference in officiating.  These refs don't have the real time skill to apply the rules the same way so they are afraid to make judgement calls.  Then, when they do, half the time it's wrong anyway.  Then throw in a couple of shots like the ones Romo kept taking this week and I'm surprised some teams are scoring on offense at all.

Granted, those pass interference rules have been way too much in favor of the offense recently, but the rules needed to be changed.  Just changing the way everything is called wasn't the right way to fix things.

Well, good ol Fox switched over to soccer after the Cowboys game... and, man, that sport just isn't for me.  After seeing too many college football teams screwed because we can't have nice things like playoffs, I gave up on that.  Now it's just NFL and it's wearing really thin.

Maybe I can pretend to be interested in the outcome of professional women beach volleyball games....

I don't know what is bigger news to me, the fact that there is a lingerie football league I never knew about, or the fact that the NFL hired on Refs that were from the Lingerie league and fired for incompetence.

There was a lingerie football league team here and I found out they had practices at the batting cage I visit to work out my rage issues.  Despite sitting there all day, every day I never saw them practice.  :(

:dunno It looks legit to me. The article came from the NY Daily News. I see variants of the article on other reputable news sites as well. Although, I've been fooled before, and legit sources have reported fake news before as well.

The LFL is real. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingerie_Football_League

Edit......Is the NY daily news a legit source?  ??? Maybe not.  Ah well...Duped me. At least now i know that lingerie football exists.

Hey man, refs gotta pick up the financial slack somewhere.  I can believe they moonlight at other joke venues.

Anyway, in a mildly amusing coincidence, this was on the ground in the parking lot at the park when I was walking my dogs this evening...

:lol Nice. It looks like from that pic you even have a Texas only league. not sure if it that I've been living under a rock, or football in all forms is taken far more seriously in Texas, but I have never heard about it before, and we even have a local team in MN. Well, I've only cared about arena football enough to watch two XFL games back in the day.

Oh, and I looked into the article again, it I am now pretty sure that Lingerie League claim is true. Heh. Go figure. There are worse gigs than reffing lingerie football I suppose. Although a couple of those women look like scary ass she-hulks and I would not want to be around their stank.  :scared

There is a semipro full contact female team not far from me here.  They are one of the best in the country, I believe, annual contenders for whatever national title is available.  Saw them play once.  It was pretty cool.  These chicks were good.

Well, I guess the replacement refs quit taking bribes to throw games and now we're going to have an actual season starting this weekend.

Anyway, here's what the lingering $20 has been pissed away on:

New England Patriots defeat Buffalo Bills
Seattle defeats St. Louis
Tampa Bay defeats Redskins
Dallas gives me slight hope and squeaks by Chicago

I say either way we end the first round this weekend and reset things for next week.  Call it a tie if we both had good or bad picks?

This was an enjoyable thread until half of you picked the Patriots.

 :dunno

As far as the bets go:

New England Patriots defeat Buffalo Bills - win
Seattle defeats St. Louis - loss
Tampa Bay defeats Redskins - loss
Dallas gives me slight hope and squeaks by Chicago - meh, tomorrow.

Unless Ahofle wants to call it a tie, what if we keep round one going and run round two at the same time? Ahofle and PBJ can pick games in each one if they want.  That finishes round one and gives them the chance to repeat too.

Thoughts?

I'd be up for that.  I'm ready to start round 2.

I"m good either way -- you call it Hoops.  It's definitely not as interesting without a bunch of people playing.
