I also stand by pinballjim's deleted post, which I never saw. I should probably just shake my head and walk away, rather than fanning the spark, but he's just some guy who got very old and then died. It's not like Heath Ledger or what's-her-name from 8 Mile, who died tragically young. And it's not like this Ernest Borgnine, whose name none of us even knew before this thread, was like Paul Newman or Tom Hanks or Humphrey Bogart. His filmography is just a long, long list of almost nothing but mediocrity. And that's fine. I'm not trying to disparage the guy, or disrespect the dead. I'm just saying that, like, are we going to have one of these posts for every single actor who grows old and dies of natural causes? Because . . . that's sort of something that every single one of them do. And posting a thread for all of them, frankly, dilutes the impact of the ones that actually matter.

But obviously some people like to make these posts, and others like to comment on them and remember the person/actor/celebrity a bit.  What's the big deal?  The Subject line is pretty clear, so non-interested people can skip as needed.  The same way I skip posts about vector quality in certain monitors as being waaay too technical.

EB was a very recognizable actor/voice to multiple generations that passed away.  Whether it was before his time or after his time, he's gone.  If you liked him, that's sad.

And regarding his filmography, I find it neat that the guy who was in McHale's Navy and the Dirty Dozen, which my Dad watched, was also a character I've seen as recently as Red, and was a recurring character on Spongebob which my son is familiar with.  That's neat.  Dude had 203 listings on the IMDB page for both Movies and TV, holy crap!

I've been a fan for many years and enjoyed his acting. The guy didn't always get great roles, but he did awesome with them. Even the episode of E.R. he did still makes me tear up.

Technically, they all matter to someone.  So that statement is kind of mean, but on the whole, I'm with some of you guys about all the RIP threads lately.

I knew him as the voice of Mermaid Man for the most part as well.  I don't believe I've seen any of his actual movies, but maybe I'm wrong.

I don't at all dislike him. I didn't say unknown; I recognized him instantly. I said none of us knew his name. Which I think is almost certainly true, or at least almost none of us knew his name. He's a fine actor, and he seems like a cool guy. It's just that cool people die by the thousands every day. And it's not like any of us, not a single one of us, ever in our entire lives went out of our way to watch something because we knew that Ernest Borgnine was in it. And if we saw a movie poster that said Ernest Borgnine, none or almost none of us would know who that name referred to. If this thread didn't show up like two days after the Andy Griffith thread I wouldn't have said anything. But since it did, and since he's just an actor (aka, it's not like Clint Eastwood died) . . . it seemed like an odd thread--like we're going to have a BYOAC vigil for every actor that dies.

I watched "The Wild Bunch" a few years ago specifically because I was curious to see him in a more serious movie.  My memories of him (fond ones) was of playing lovable losers in low quality productions.   It was quite interesting to see him in that type of role.

I agree with others that mentioned his Spongebob appearances.  I just love that my kids can laugh at him and Tim Conway without knowing who they were.

There are some good films/TV shows on the list. But by far the majority of the films/TV shows on the list are not good. At all. And that's fine. I would love to have had that career. I think he probably made a ton of money having a helluva lot of fun. But his filmography still is what it is. 7th Heaven. Touched by an Angel. Walker Texas Ranger. BASEketball. About 150 poorly rated made-for-TV movies that nobody has heard of. You all supposedly know this guy by name, but literally almost everything he has ever been in is very bad, most of it completely obscure made-for-TV stuff, and most of it small guest roles. I mean, Ginsu Victim is just flat out lying about him and his wife. That's just silly.  

In other words, I have absolutely nothing against the guy. It just strikes me as strange that he has a thread dedicated to him. And coming right on the heels of the Andy Griffith thread, I wondered whether Saint might want consider an Obituary subforum. But now it's beginning to strike me as even stranger that I'm in here defending this position so ardently. So I guess I'll stop.

Ironically, had I known Ernest Borgnine by name I wouldn't have ever clicked on this thread. It was my very ignorance that made me click on this thread, saying, "Ernest Borgnine . . . who's that?"  Just think of all the suffering in this world that could have been avoided had I just been a little better informed.
