I'm in two minds on it:
when i continue to stare i get drawn into the vortex and feel as if the characters are being sucked in.

On the other hand i think the characters need to have there lighting changed (as they suffer a little as looking like stuck on stickers)
To achieve the lighting they should be nice and bright at the vortex side and gradient to dark. (can be done with layer mask and black to transparent gradient)

I would maybe make 2-3 of the chars way bigger to give a depth to the scene (otherwise they all look on the same plane)

otherwise good attempt as this scene is quite difficult to achieve.
Cheers
Adam

Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

Yes it does seem a little sticker-ish. Thanks for the input. Will have them make some changes.

If they are being sucked down I would think that having the blurs radiate from the character towards the middle rather than in both directions might give it a more dynamic look.  Blurs both ways give the impression of vibrating back and forth. Plus it would give you a clean edge on each character.

Also, maybe have the ones on the border significantly bigger than those towards the center to give the image a bit of depth.

Just my 2 Pence worth. I quite like it, but It confuses my mind somewhat.  I cant tell if they are being sucked into the vortex or they are trying to escape from the vortex,

Those that look like they are trying to escape, IE Mario, princess etc now have the blur the correct side, it looks like they are running away from the centre and makes sense.

But then you have the mouse sort of standing around looking over his shoulder, he still has the illusion of movement without looking like he has actually been moving.

If you were doing this for me I would move Mario & Princess up & left and then lose the mouse & Dirk and replace them with Arthur & one of the flying demons from Ghosts & Goblins running away from centre.

Edited to make point easier to understand :)

I agree, the characters being sucked in should have the blur on the outside.
