Y'know, that wood is the same kind that we use for our house walls (V-Match Pine, similar but whatever). I wondered what a cab using that would look like. Now I know it looks absolutely godawful.

Also, if that guy wanted to play Mortal Kombat so bad, why doesn't he just use the 6 or 7-button setup and use the two middle buttons as block like everyone else does? Sure beats the hell out of using 14 buttons.

And those sticks...why? Why? With a CP like that you can afford to drill holes in the wood and do a real mounting job with a good pair of sticks!

The thing about this cab is it is clearly being set up for playing fighting games.

Note the:

-widescreen monitor for modern games like Street Fighter IV, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Mortal Kombat 9.

-specific set of buttons on the left that use a dedicated Mortal Kombat layout

-the specific set of buttons on the right that mimic the standard SF layout

but then everything goes to pot:

-way too many buttons.  It would get confusing during competitive play.  It's also sort of illegal for competitive play if those buttons are wired in a way that each set of six buttons is connected to only six inputs.  That would allow very quick mashing to get out of dizzies and other abusive techniques.  Additionally, it allows the use of macros, which are very frowned upon when using proper arcade controls. 

-those damned E-sticks!  What kind of fighting game player uses that junk?

It's a very nice cab overall, but damn if the controls aren't screwed up.  And I BET if I went to the dudes house he would criticize me for being too picky and say it works just fine for him and all his friends.

I never really understood why people build an entire cabinet body and then do absolutely nothing with it. Dude could have just built a stand-alone control panel and not have that TV surrounded by a lumberyard. Why even bother?

And the buttons are ridiculous.  Is Mortal Kombat so important you need to have the block directly in the vertical center? He could have added a button above that, have his precious MK layout, a workable SF layout, and that ergonomic curve that some people like - all without having to add a completely separate layout.

Tell you what... I'll make a sub-section on my website.  Or maybe here.... I think that it's only fair to have a "hall of shame" if we are also going to have a "hall of fame."

I don't want to just pick things on my own accord though... how about a council of crap?  I'm thinking 3-5 senior members besides myself.

It'll be fun!  People can submit their own cabs for judging and if we find thier rig to be acceptable they'll get the honor of a special "NOT CRAP!" icon. 

I'll start a discussion thread in the "everything else" forum where we can work out the details.

The fact that the cab is unadorned is fine in my eyes.  It's a fighting game cabinet.  The form and function is more important than the beauty.  

Many fighting gamers would prefer to play on a big, undecorated box with no marquee, coin door, or other features of a standard cab.  All they want is the stability of a fixed control panel. The other stuff isn't nearly as important.

Which is why this cab is so vexing to me.  On the surface it looks like a no-nonsense workhorse for competitive play.  But then it has those sticks in it, and the ridiculous button layout.  It ruins what it was aiming for.

Not harsh at all if it's done right. I figured out who owns(ed) some of the cabs on CrapMAME and one of them pulls double honors on the Hall of Fame or won MAMEY or some such. The owners don't seem to be overly offended by the site. CrapMAME does what it's supposed to do, point out serious design mistakes and makes the whole thing light hearted.

I agree there are too many buttons, but I think the woodworking is good as well, I've seen alot worse and don't agree with all the bashing....whomever built it, liked it, thats what its all about. You know what they say about opinions and  , everyones got one....

The tone seems a bit bullyish to me. And this comes from someone show might have a bit of a bully streak in him. Probably this is the person's first build. I know that if I hadn't taken so damned long to build my cab I would have built a frankenpanel. My thought was that I was only going to have one cab so I needed it to cover as many bases as possible. It's easy, especially in the initial excitement of it all, to go crazy imagining all the great possibilities, without considering the little things that later on you might say to yourself, "Oh yeah . . . I guess I can't really use it like that after all."

In essence, I think criticism can be very useful. But deliberately trying to embarrass a person just because you see an opportunity to make fun of them . . .

Now, if the person is regularly an ---uvula--- to people, that's a different story. I say go open season. But if it's just some anonymous person doing his best at something he's never done before--why not just help the guy out?

I think that posting on reddit means there's some reasonable expectation of feedback.  I don't think that the term bullying applies.  the comments have been addressed towards the product not the poster.  That said, I hope there's not someone out there on some esoteric forum bagging on my projects!  Karma.

The product is the person who built it. A person is what a person does in almost any sense that matters. You can't make fun of my clothes without making fun of me because I was the one who picked out the clothes. You can't make fun of my novel without making fun of me because I was the one who wrote it. And you can't make fun of my MAME cab without making fun of me because I was the one who built it.

Edit: keep in mind, I'm not saying everyone ought ta be saints. A little ribbing can be fun and if you're gonna put yourself out there you should have thick enough skin to take it. But what I'm seeing in this thread strikes me as edging more toward cruelty than lighthearted fun at someone else's expense. And, of course, if the guy is an ---uvula--- in general, let him have it. If that's David Foley's cab just, ya know, tear it to pieces. But there's plenty of good things to say about that thing. The builder is, or at least was, super proud of it. And there is a lot about it to be proud of. I just think this thread is probably unnecessary and reflects poorly on our community.

True dat. But that's why I say that whole top half should go and then just make it a pedestal cabinet. That's a fine looking TV in what appears to be a nicely decorated man-cave. Hanging it on a wood structure is gratuitous if it serves no further decorative purpose, dare I say, actually cheapens it a bit (read: a lot).

His skills are way beyond mine. 

I think this is a good case of a time when someone probably already has the woodworking skills to make a good, solid cabinet, but they don't have the knowledge or experience with the technology to install the correct controls. 

I'm the exact opposite.  I can set up the software to run in exact native resolutions and refresh rates, and make sure that I use the most accurate emulators.  I can minimize input delay, and calibrate the monitor to display the most accurate colors.  I know which joystick encoders to buy, and the best brand of joystick and buttons for each particular game.

But I'm useless with a circular saw.

 Trying to play MK with a SF layout is a pain, when you have gotten used to the MK layout.
And almost nothing else can use an MK layout effectively.

 So the real gripe is the choice of sticks.  So what.  The guy chose a poor stick.  My god, the crime of the century ehh?  Maybe he had them given to him for free.  Maybe he is ill informed at which sticks are best for the games he wants to play.  Then again, even some of the experts cant agree on that ehh?

And, of course, anyone using those sticks can't be overly concerrned with authenticity to begin with.

The point is, the mistakes, and don't kid yourself, they ARE mistakes, are understandable. Even the builder surely realizes that now that it's built and he's used it. But he clearly put a lot of care and heart into the machine's construction and the teardown it was getting was overly harsh and unwarranted.

If anything, though, you're little (read: big) diatribe will only encourage more of it, if for no other reason than to provoke more crazy-town out of you. Stop it.

X2's comment was directed to the bully community as a whole and the Nazi point was supposed to be humor like seinfeld's soup nazi.  Well I got at least.  I totally agree with his comments, and the thread response is the standard fare you get with competitive individuals that are passionate of their hobby.  I get the same grief when I go into a dance and rap forum and ask for MC Hammer imports. 

We should have a rule to stop posting pictures of peoples creative accomplishment, and being abusive about it.  It is always fine to critique somebody work with helpful comments and technical improvements, but to flat out slam people for their choice of wood, controls, or software is a bit much.

I am not much of a woodworker, but I will show off my labors in the Project Announcements forum, and hear those who are interested, suggestive comments and encouragement.

It's not too bad, not crazy about the mk and sf button layout, but the rest of the cabinet is made well though. One thing about arcade cabinets, they are never really done. Honestly, Ive seen worse cabinets on Craigslist.
