Editing MAME.CFG by hand
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:47:58 pm »
Holy crap.  I can't get it to display properly.  I've tried:

RTF
TXT
DOC
XML
XLS

Extensions.  How can you view/edit this file by hand?

NOTE:  THIS IS WITH MAME32 .78

Yeah, works for a newer version of those files, but not for the MAME32 .78.  I need to use that version, too, since I've got it on an ancient rig.

download notepadd++
webdevs choice, and opens any and every file without converting to windows end-of-line endings as notepad does with some linux files.
or if you cbf, use wordpad (it doesn't convert files either, and handles linux files fine).

Nevermind, didn't read last post... Maybe give it a go anyway.

isn't it suppose to be mame.ini? Maybe it was different in the older version.

Do you have Windows set to display the extension of known file types? You might have accidentally named it something like "mame.cfg.txt", in which case mame won't see it.

I'll second Notepad++, but Notepad.exe is largely unchanged since Win95. The only change I'm aware of in recent years is the ability to open a file larger than 64k (the original versions would give you an error the file is too big).

back in the old days, MAME.CFG is not standard text file.

I have a large dislike of MS Notepad, because if you open a file that has the typical linux end-of-line markers /n it converts them to windows end-of-line markers /r.
