« on: August 23, 2011, 02:52:50 pm »
Holy crap...  felt it here in Salisbury.  We work in the tallest building here...  7 floors...   Kinda scary, but cool at the same time...  Our boss is out and we turned over all his chairs...  hehe

5.9 somewhere in Virginia...  Anyone else?

I work in a cheaply constructed single story building in central Pennsylvania.
Instinctually, I looked outside to see how hard the wind was blowing.  :lol

Was pretty subtle.  Half my co-workers didn't notice it.

Haha, agreed.  At work, everyone stood up nervous and evacuated.  I stayed behind to finish my sandwich.  So I'm less sissy I guess.

I felt it (right outside NYC).  It scared the crap out of me... although earthquake was the last thing on my mind - I thought a bomb went off or something.

Shortly after I moved to Seattle from CA I was watching the 2 hour series finale of Seinfeld and there was an earthquake, must have been about 4.9.  They news cut in to the episode and kept showing the same footage - over and over and over again, of people in an office looking puzzled while a hanging lamp swayed gently room side to side about 8 inches.  I was pretty annoyed.  But if you're not accustomed to them, they can be pretty scary no matter the size.
I now live back in CA and one of the houses in the town I live in sits directly on a fault.  It's being torn apart very slowly and keeps getting repaired.  Check this out.

Bringing to life a child's imagination.

That was an awful sissified earthquake.  I was cutting the grass at the time and thought I had ran over a rock or a coal truck had drove by or something.

I watch our local news and all of the state buildings evacuated for AN HOUR because they thought it was a terrorist threat.  Serioulsy an hour?  How long does it check to log onto the internet, realize there was a quake a couple hundred miles away and move on?

City folks.... I just don't know.....

Well can't speak for the rest, but I did.  5 seconds after.  First listing on google for "earthquake" is a "Recent earthquakes" government site.
Took the fire safety team half hour to finally announce that.

I didn't mean us.  As individuals most people (especially people on this site) are pretty smart.  It's when we get organized into groups/govermental bodies that the stupidity starts.  ;)

On Sept 11th I had a cousin working in the second tower. When the plane hit the first tower the "organized groups" didn't want AN HOUR of inconvenience, so instead of evacuating the buildings they were telling people to remain calm and stay in their offices.  A coworker of my cousin had a window office. he's a big sissy that didn't want to see people jumping to their deaths to avoid the fire, so he asked my cousin to go with him on an early lunch.

By the time they were walking out of the building the second plane hit their building. Everyone in his office is now dead and the company no longer exists.

Stupidity ends when the organized groups/govermental bodies listen to individuals who don't know what they're talking about.

My wife an I felt it in Concord, NH.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I'm sorry for your loss but you do understand that I live in Charleston WV right?  There are only a handfull buildings in town that have more than 5 floors.

Besides you just said it, it wasn't individuals it was groups of people.  Again, individuals are smart, groups of people are stupid.  So for all of your anger, you just agreed with me.

Thanks, but I didn't lose anything. My cousin had to find another job.

I am the only one in this thread saying those steps of precaution were a good thing, but there is a group of people in this thread who think as you do.

So by your own logic, I'm the smart individual here and the rest of you are in a group of stupidity.

...and I do agree with you on that.

Meh, to me you are both saying the same thing, lack of a real security planning. Anytime there is an unexpected disaster, emergency authorites over a building of people need to proactively research, evaluate and execute a plan quickly and efficiently keep everyone is secure. In both your cases, it was those authorities just picking their asses and not figuring out the situation in a timely manner.

In Howard's example, evacuating the building does not equal safe, in many scenarios it is the much more dangerous place to be. If it was really part of a planned attack, then the attacker would have effectively smoked their targets right out of the building.

Speaking of researching emergency scenarios, what are you basing yours on?

In all the planned attacks in the US that I know of, the attackers just focused on the people inside of the buildings.

I was mostly thinking about shootings, although they historically haven't been coupled with bombings. There have been many cases of suicide bombers aiming for a crowded area of people to detonate in, and major terrorist attacks have often been multi staged, synchronized plans.

The only thing constant about successful (not sure if that is the word to use in this case) attacks is that the attack methods have always changed. That said, the smoke out tactic is nothing new. It was also a fairly common Mafia tactic in the prohibition era. Two part hit and run. They would send a person ahead to light a fire in a rival gang building. Then a second party would do a drive by when the target is evacuating. Technically, it has been used for thousands of years though.

Also, When nuclear fallout was the major worry, the last thing they would want you to do was to go outside. Today, that is still a possible scenario, although it is more likely to be from dirty bombs.

The next time your inside of a building being burnt to the ground, just remain calm and stay inside the building.
You can then let us know how that worked out for you.
