Worst part about job interviews????
« on: June 09, 2011, 11:59:12 am »
So i just had my first job interview in quite awhile trying to get a promotion within my company.  I was wondering what everyone thinks the worst/most unnerving part of the interview is.  For me it is how after answering a question how they just look at you for a second then start writing down your answer without saying anything.  The silence and not being able to read what they thought about your answer is the worst.   :-\

Haha I was going to say that. I hate having to answer stupid ass questions. "Whats your greatest achievement in life? Why should we hire you? What is your biggest fault?" I used to hate having to ask those questions in an interview. Stupid company made me ask them. Annoying.  ::) Luckily my Regional isnt a micro-manager, so I dont have to do ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- like that anymore.  ;D

Yeah the questions they were asking were all situational.  "Tell us about a time you had to solve a problem or deal with a difficult situation involving an external business partner"  I think i did pretty well and have high hopes as the significant raise will help me get the rest of the funding for my 1st full cabinet build  ;D

Anyone who didn't figure that out on their own better be interviewing to flip burgers.  Just sayin'.

Bet that's a very subtle and hard to legally challenge way of asking "are you ghetto?"

A question I ask when interviewing someone is "Are you easily offended?", but then I don't work in a normal office working environment :)

I always hated the question "Whats your greatest fault?"  because 99% of the people will answer with either "Perfectionist" or "I work too hard" which is always complete BS.

The worst thing about an interview is getting the stains out of your suit afterwards.

I've had to interview potential peers. By the time they get to the peer interview they've  more or less got the job, it feels like were there just to give the impression that we’re a professional company.

None of us doing the interviewing care or prepare for it so any silence is because we're waiting for someone else to say something. We don't want to be there either.

...Unless the interviewee is a she and she's cute.

I think what I hate the most, is going through the "Dog and pony show" giving it your best effort, Only to say "We hired an internal candidate", Like they knew all along who they were going to hire!

What I absolutely hate is the lunch interviews. I know they do it to try to make you more comfortable, but it does quite the opposite. I am usually first in line for free food, but damn, you will never feel more watched when eating in your entire life. Also, you end up panicking about your meal choice and how the interviewer will analyze exactly what you eat and how you eat. I easily prefer sitting in a conference room with a cup of water any day.

Nah.  The worst are the ones that come with the "This person thinks they are interviewing for a talent position... but what they do not know is that I am not really an agent and there is no job..." disclaimer.

Strangest question I ever got was:  "If you were a super hero, which one would you be and why?"  I answered that I am a super hero looking for a daytime alias to hide my secret identity.  Got the job so who can figure what they were actually looking for on that one.
Please!  Give me the good news first!

I hate when they make the money offer.

"Well, we see you've asked for more than we can afford to pay right now, but we're willing to start you at $X amount and work up from there."

I'm the guy that tells them that they have my offer, unless I'm really into the job and can make the sacrifice. I value my time - gotta pay me what I'm worth.

I saw a job posting not too long ago that listed these qualifications for a construction worker:
Must have own hand tools
Must have own hard hat/safety vest/steel toed boots
Have a vehicle
Be willing and able to pick up coworkers with your vehicle and take them to the job site
Hard worker, capable of lifting 50+ lbs repeatedly
$10/hour

I hate when they make the money offer.

My current job was advertised with a pay scale.  They made an offer £1000 under the scale (it was an internal move).  They said that to justify a pay rise from my current wage to the new scale, the board of directors would need to be consulted, and we don't want to do that do we?

I replied, yes, I'm confident that I can justify the pay rise to the directors and am happy to meet them.  5 minutes later, a job offer and a pay rise midway in the new scale.

Why must everyone try and screw you  :banghead:

Heh.  My first job review out of college I was told "I don't want to give you a raise because people your age spend the money on stuff like partying and motorcycles.  I don't want to put you in that position."

Like jim, speechless.  I had a new wife and baby to support and two sets of student loans to pay off.  Thankfully that was a couple years before the dot com crash so I left the company a few months later for a decent bump in salary.

A lawyer friend of mine went out to lunch with a couple of prospective partners. They sat down, ate, talked about everything, she thought the "interview" went extremely well and that she nailed it. Turns out they didnt hire her because she put salt on her food before she tasted it, and they thought that she judged things before taking things into consideration, despite the fact that they thought she was awesome, and that she gave stellar answers to her questions, and just a pleasant person.  ::)

So they prejudged her superficially based on the fact that they thought she judged things before considering them?

Sounds like there was something else going on and that's the story she got.

Im sorry, I re-read that and I explained it in a stupid way. They said that she pre judged things because she put salt on her food before she tasted it, as in, maybe it didnt need salt, but she wouldnt have known that because she put salt on it first.

She is hot too, so who the hell knows.  :dunno

No, it was clear, but the irony in the story is that they did to her what they said she did to the food.

Oftentimes the "reason" a person is not hired has nothing to do with the reason actually given.  The interviewers just don't want to tell you because there's no use in a confrontation with someone you aren't going to hire anyway.

Engineering interviews are often easy.  You ask 2-3 questions and if you know what you're talking about it's very easy to determine if the other person does.   From there it's just a "can I work with this person" or "do I want to work with this competent person or the other competent person".

I do wish there were a quick test for "is this guy a keyboard commando nutbag", though.

I do wish there were a quick test for "is this guy a keyboard commando nutbag", though.

Oh, that one is easy for you.  "Am I looking into a mirror?" ought to answer that.

It's nearly the weekend, jim.  Take your panties off and untangle them.  You might feel better for a while.

In Jim's defense, you are a keyboard commando nutbag. In your defense there is someone far worse on here, I'll secretly refer to him as Mr.X
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

:laugh2: Yeah I agree with that. Ol Mr. X is pissing me off in a different thread.
Pictures are overrated anyway.

I would normally jump and and point out that there is worse than X, but every time give him some credit I end up seeing a 5000 word rant that requires an afternoon to read, if anyone actually had actually spent the time reading it.

I leave it at: At least he provides us with a bunch of great running jokes.  :lol

Very true. I always manage to skim it though, and for some reason ALWAYS get to the annoying parts. But like you said, the running gags are pretty decent.
