howards Pinball Wrapper
« on: August 30, 2003, 07:42:16 pm »
Hi there i was wondering if Howards Pinball wrapper runs under win98? I have it working fine on Xp, but when i run under win98 on my cabinet, i get a black screen when i send a command line to it to load a table... I have to hit ctrl/alt/del to get back the os...i installed the vb runtime files (just in case it needed) and the .ocx files... but still no luck

I'm stuck runnning under 98 in my cab or i would just switch to xp....But advmame (win version) is just too unstable, so i have to use the dos version under win98

thanks
sac

Well I can tell you it did work in 98 and it should still. Honestly I haven't used 98 on a test machine in a long while.  I'll test it out when I get my cocktail up and running.

Ok, Thanks for the quick reply Howard...I'll keep plotting along... i tried one of the older versions for the heck of it.. same thing, so the problem would seem to be somewhere with my OS.  Does the wrapper call on any system files? DLLs, OCX, etc? maybe i'm still missing something it needs.

Can you run a table without the wrapper? Trouble shooting makes my head hurt!

yep.. vpinball works fine

it's just when i use the wrapper that it locks up.. i know in the settings it says don't turn on these option in win9x will cause errors (translucency settings)

but that's not turned on.

Are you sure it locks up?  The wrappers hide the table loading process from you (or at least they try really hard).  Some tables take quite a while to load.

hmmm... well now that you say that... letsee...

ok...i let it try to load a table (apollo13 in this case) the screen goes black... the pointer shows up for a second...then all black again....i waited 10 minutes.. still nothing, tried all keyboard and mice combos.. still locked.  Crtl/alt/delete only way to get back

it shows in the taskmanager that the 1st task is visual pinball launcher... i have to end task to get back to desktop

damn.. :)

look for visual pinball and visual pinmame

yeah, there's no breakdown on task/processes on win 98.. just programs that are running.. and vpinball and vpin mame arn't it the list when this happens..

ok, i'm gonna go start from scracth on my laptop (also a win98 machine) and see where that gets me.

i reinstalled pinmame and vpinball from scratch. but i installed vpinball into the dir i have off of C:\pinball

that was the problem, i guess the launcher looks for vpinball in it's default install location "program files" lol

damn, sorry howard, 1 more question...when i launch with the wrapper, the table and pinmame window are coming up fine.. when i hit esc, pinmame stops, but vpinball keeps going, the i need the hit "q", it brings me back to the editor, and a window labled "visual pinball launcher" comes up saying "caption not found"?

this is it.. last hurdle :)

that sounds like you are using the wrong wrapper with the wrong version of pinmame (not visual pinball)  check that out as it makes a huge difference.

Also you have to hold the escape key, not simply tap it.  You need to hold it until it finishes exiting.

version 1.21, so that uses your latest pinball wrapper right?

here's exactly what happens.. i launch a table with the wrapper (either with the wrappers menu, or command line)  it launches both the table and the pinmame window (occasionally the table flashes and get's entirely replaced with just the pinmame window, but rarely) i can play the table ok.. now if i hit "esc" the quit or resume window pops up (i tried holding down esc, no difference) if i hit "q" it goes to a black screen, i have to hit 'esc' again, the editor, and a window labeled "visiaul pinball launcher" (the wrapper i assume?" pops up saying "caption not found"

that's where i'm at :)
i guess it didn't matter what i mention before about where i install Vpinball.. it just needed to be reinstalled anywhere for some reason

thanks

BTW, the time that the table flashes and get's replace with just the pinmame window in the corner, hitting esc ends just like it should.. no editor or anything.. so it would seem that there's something going on as to what window is on top... i also tried changing the true/false setting

I absolutely got the same problem - what turns me mad that many months ago it worked all perfect, but I guess it stopped working after I had to install the never version (because of their stupid evaluation).

Now I turned back the date of the PC and installed the old Pinmame 1.20 - at least now it starts fine, but I've absolutely the same exiting problems on my cab.

Using Win98 and absolutely clueless. I'd really love it if it would work again and could run VisualPinball from my FE without any probs.  :(

By the way, what should I get for which wrapper? Just wanna hear it again - is it PINMAME 1.20 for the wrapper v3 or VISUALPINMAME 1.20 for v3? Quite confusing, and I can't find any documentation on the Lazarus-site.

Only thing I know, the latest VisualPinmame-version doesn't work for me, I've no sound on tables like Addams Family.

yeah, it's definatly a win98 problem with the wrapper, cuz the same exact setup (dragged the folder over on network) works perfectly on winxp

i think it might be a stupid path issue...try using shortpathnames to to the wrapper from your fe...doing that it worked for me on my cab using w98se. using the older version of pinmame...

i nortmally use my own launcher so i can't check with which version of the wrapper this was...i took a look but i must have deleted it at some point...

actually, i havn't even put it in the FE yet, i've been troubleshooting with command lines in a dos prompt

i did try shorter table names also

it's probably something stupid (quiet Silver! :) but it's only rearing it's head in 98

ok.. well all this has brought me back to trying Xp in the cab again.. it's just that advmames svgawin driver is ,to their own admission, unstable.. but i'm gonna try it again.. i'll leave it running selecting random games all night and see what happens.. all goes well, and i can put Vpinball and the Wrapper with no problem

wish me luck :P
