For a street fighter cab, I like the one on the right.

I like  the one on the right better, but I am more a angle guy than a curve guy when it comes to design

Looks good. I like the right one better than the Left .

Though I would have gone with replicating a Dynamo cabinet, either Z-back or straight:

Back then, most Street Fighter kits were installed in dynamo cabinets.
At 1/8th the size, a dynamo cab would look pretty cool!

Looks like it's coming together nicely.  I like the curves at the bottom.  Where are the speaker grills from?

I also really like the hinged keyboard tray idea.  I wish this thread was around before I started my cab, I woulda done my keyboard tray the same way.

Looking good.

Are you waiting to cut the t-molding channels in this cab? Or is this not going to have t-molding? I know you asked about red t-molding in another thread, but not sure if it was for this project or another game you might have.

The cabinet looks really nice. I'd really think twice about installing all of those buttons on the control panel......less is much better when it comes to control panels.....IMO

i knew i was gonna get roasted for that  ;D bottom three are pinball

8 butons per player n64/ps1/ps2/ps3

1player + start (mame)
2player + start (mame)

middle for HS fe, genre, menu, pause etc etc

my family will use it alot and i want them to be able to use the functions with having to "ask" how to use it.

i dont want to use a shift key as each buttons function is labeled, here's my cp artwork;

I think the buttons in the middle of the CP would look better if they were on the bezel.

Are you sure you want 8 buttons?  From my experience, console games play better with control pads then joysticks.  But whatever works best for you!

How do you like those wheels on your cab? I had an Atari DigDug with similiar wheels. I hated them, it always felt like it was going to get away from me when I was moving it.

Nice clean looking build. Your Uncle's craftsmanship is superb!  :applaud:

my family will use it alot and i want them to be able to use the functions with having to "ask" how to use it.
I'm assuming you mean, "without having to ask how to use it".
This is why it's vital for a more simple CP. The less buttons, the less intimidating it'll look, the less need to figure out what does what.

I personally don't like having mame function buttons. IMO it takes away from the arcade experience. Things like Pause (pausing an arcade game??), Back, Enter, a dedicated button for hyper-spinning? But hey, some people like that granularity of control, and there is no mistake this clearly is a Mame cabinet.

I'd go with the bezel mounting for these buttons if you're going to keep 'em. The cleaner the CP space, the better.
Many folks have gone this route, Kman mounted his to his bezel:

Then of course there's Pixelhugger's fine work:

I really like the look of this cab, like you I was inspired to make my own by seeing Martijn's awesome SF cab.

I'm fairly useless with tools, even tho my dad's a builder and would have all the required tools.  :lol
So instead a mate of a mate is giving me his old cabinet that is just sitting in his garage FOR FREE! Can't wait.

I am very keen to see how u do the art for this cab tho, to see if i can steal some ideas ;)
Good luck, can't wait for more updates.

Wow, your cab is looking awesome!
Do you have the plans for this cab since my hands are itching to start project number 2 (my first project was a Neo-Geo cab) and this cab looks SWEEEEET!
How did your uncle make those nice curbs in the woodwork? Truly the hand of a master.
Question; why did you put screws in the bezel(on each corner of the monitor)? Does it serve a purpose or is there another reason that I'm missing?
Because those shiny little bulbs (painted or not) will annoy you when you're hurtling fireballs. Trust me, one of my mistakes.
And I understand the keyboard tray for practical purposes, but I am not a fan of 'em.
Keep em coming and if you have the plans or if you can redirect me to where you got em, I would be grateful!!!

You might want to revisit the marquee area. If your marquee is going to be the entire width of the cab, the marquee retainer wood you have installed will block the light and create a dark spot where your artwork should be lit.

Also, like Nephasth said - where is the T-molding slot? Do you plan on cutting a t-mold slot? It's too late now, but you really should cut a t-mold slot early so if you make a massive mistake, you can recut a side. Also, make sure you don't hit a screw or anything which could cause you to lose control of the router.

Looking good.

yes it is having t-mould.....i dont understand why you think its too late now? we have lots of room, and the cab is being dismantled to be painted anyway.... the marque perspex is etched at the ends, works kinda like fibre optics.... so no dark spots. The keyboard tray is a must for me...... the FE isn't final yet so still lots to do.....the tray is hidden and will be hard to see once painted. the "bolts" are used to see if the screen looked ok...... a bezel along with perspex is to follow.

thx for you comments keep em coming.

There is a chance you can have a mishap while cutting the t-molding slot, thereby ruining your side.

I didn't realize you plan on disassembling for paint. So, even if you screw up a side, or have an issue you should be able to fix it.

However, it just makes sense to slotcut your side before putting any screws in it or anything else. Just ensures you won't have an accident while cutting the slot.

I like many aspects of your cabinet, good work so far!  :applaud: Yor finishing details are nice with the rounded edges everywhere..

Few things I would reconsider though;

Reduce the amount of overhang on your control panel. The overage has no purpose, and just makes the monitor look smaller. If it was usable surface area, that would be different....

Player 2's button layout should be rotated slightly counter-clockwise, or it may be VERY uncomfortable to play when standing side by side. Since P2 stands slightly right of center, his right hand will have to rotate uncomfortably to the right to compensate for standing off-square, causing a hard bend at the wrist. I figured I'd at least mention this since you haven't drilled anything yet. I understand that symmetry is 'pretty', but with an 8-button layout, you really should reconsider your ergonomics a bit more (especially if you plan on bringing these to market). There is also too much spacing between the buttons. You would need GIANT hands to take advantage of your current layout. You also need to move player 1&2 further apart. It looks like there is only about an inch between P1's buttons and P2's joystick...That will make you sorry.

Have you ever visited slagcoin.com? they have great layout templates there...

Thats looking really sharp. Don't ya just love that feeling when you cant wait to do something! Thats what the hobby is about. Looks like you are enjoying your work, and I see you visited slagcoin, good choice on the layouts. Is that the astro city layout? If so, are you using the different p1 & p2 layouts? I was surprised at the subtle differences between the two in terms of spacing, and now having drilled them, its amazing how well they fit your fingers.

I made a panel before where I used only the p1 layout for both players, and it felt like your wrist was gonna break after a while if you were in the p2 position..Thinking back, it definitely gave me the upper hand in Street fighter 4 when I had friends over to play! >:D

I'm about 90% finished on my cab and this thread has made me want to scrap it and start again.

Those rounded edges and neat wood work all round are an inspiration to me.

When the moon is not full and I've rehearsed my spiel, I'll try and talk the missus round to giving me some "garage" time again  ;D

This is looking good.  Where did you get your Marquee retainer.  The stuff I've seen looks like it has a much larger radius than what you have.

Make sure you sand and polish the edge of the plexiglas - it will really give it a "professional" look and you will be amazed at the difference (the router always leaves scuff marks along the edge).

Can you post more pics/details on how you are planning to access the hinges inside your CP?  I see the (hidden) holes for your hands to get in there but how do you get to them?  Does the entire CP come off first?

Finally, how are you going to power on your TV when you power on the computer - is that going to be an issue?

This thing is looking really sharp - I can't wait to see some art on there.

no we dont lol  :lol

the latches for the control panel are easily gotten to via the front "door" or via the keyboard draw....

the tv will be powered via a two stage switch from on top of the cab..... first powers the pc.... second stage powers the tv..... the scart to vga is wired to auto switch to AV (although this hasn't been tested yet)

not sure if the power switch for both the pc and tv can be on the same parallel wired switch...... if that makes sense...... but i'll look more into this as i get there.

thx for the comments

I have wondered this myself and thought it would be best to use a DPDT or DPST momentary switch to keep the circuits seperate. However, I couldn't find a DPDT or DPST microswitch that would fit on the end of an arcade button, so if you want an arcade button for the power button, this wouldn't work. But if you're flexible you can probably find a DPDT or DPST momentary switch/button that wouldn't look half bad.

You can always use a smart strip to power on the TV when the computer is turned on, or vice versa

That's only if the TV has an actual on and off switch though, right?  My 19" bedroom TV will not turn on from a light switch, for example.  If I turn it off, the only way to turn it back on is to press the power button.

There are ways to fix that.  One way is to keep the power button pressed down.  Then it should work with the switch  >:D

Also, you could set the power switch so that the TV is the main, and set the bios on the computer to wake on power.

Loving this cabinet so far, it's given me some good ideas for my first build.  I'm making a shopping list and was hoping you could tell me what different types and size router bits were used?

Looks like a fine job so far. I'm still skeptical of the possible marquee shadows on the sides from those framing blocks. I would have taken the advice of your fellow byoac'rs here and removed those. But you should post some pictures of it lit up with the installed lights, to silence the skeptics like me.

How heavy is the cabinet? Looks like a lot of  wood in this build, which could make this thing a beast in weight.

Also, like SNAAKE asked, what are you using for the retainers? The top one looks cool being so thin.

looking good there Jahilton, i like the tv table shape :)

i can see u use same sort of marquee holder like i did, but you placed it on top of te speaker panel, if you want to hide it, you could make a 45 degree angel on the speaker panel with a trim bit and then mount the strip on top of that , then you wont see the marquee holder that much.

like i did here

keep it up!

I absolutely love the paint job on your cab. What kind of paint did you use? It sort of looks like a matt/flat textured finish (which I'd like for my own cab someday).

Keep up the good work! Very inspirational!

not sure why it looks grey in the pics...... uk based company also.

two coats with a brush then a 3rd coat with a roller.... let the paint go alittle tacky so the roller pulls up the paint so that you get the texture effect.

You can buy them at Home Depot / Lowes in the electrical section.  I forget what they are called.  They have self-adhesive backs.

was having a few probs with the rgb to scart switching to the AV..... made this little gadget....

here:s the result!

Bit of a strange one this but is there any chance you could post in more detail how you went about wiring your little rgb to scart dongle. Your cab is excellent by the way, you’re progress all along as mimicked my own so its been an interesting read!

Lovely build dude!
Pretty gfx, clean cuts, all over a nice cab!

-0,003 points for the "box cp". Something about that large top-board and the sharp corners on the box underneath that doesn't fit the rest of the cab. No biggy tho!

Dude your cab from start to finish is awesome. Everything u did was outrageous and neat; from your wiring all the way to your side art. Congrats man!

This is actually only my 2nd post....I just joined this forum and now reading "build your own arcade" trying to get my knowledge about this --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- I get cracking, but I just hope mine can even come half as close as yours and I'll be happy!
