I still have my original up in the loft but couldn't stand trying to load a game from tape.  Especially after 25 or so years, imagine how many times you'd have to rewind it a little bit!!!

I'll be getting one of these for under the TV the kids use.

Will set it up with XBMC for kids movies, etc and throw a load of old roms onto it, for C64 goodness  :applaud:.

They may even get a chance to play it.

I still love the original the SID chip in the commodore can't be replaced by a a pc i've tried :(

I just use a old MP3 player with a broken tape deck and use that had to hack it together but it works and holds alot of games.

Games have to be in WAV format otherwise it won't work as with mp3's it cuts out some of the sounds so of course that means missing data.

Might have to wait for a while on the old system which I hate but it still way better than the emulation for sound and video altho it's getting harder to keep these old systems running :(

Nah, not C64s. I have 3 of them and one of them happens to be the one I used when I was 8 years old and I have never had an issue with any of them. The PSUs were always the things to go if anything and the key is to not leave them plugged in and only plug them in when you are using them. Thats how you make that PSU last.

I agree though, I would rather use a real C64 than emulate one any day. Get yourself an Ultimate 1541-II flash cart so you don't have to have all them floppies laying around and all is good.

QFT.   I still have mine from when I was like 7 or 8 (1984).   The only thing wrong was it was the SID chip, so I did a little swaparoo with another C-64 (the C model) I got at a garage sale, sold that one "as-is" on eBay and the original is working like a charm.

However, when I first got it, we did have to exchange the 1541 like 5 times (not an exaggeration).   There were a lot of problems with the initial shipments of these computers...

I still have 5 (C-64) with 1541 drives and FD-2000.

That Ultimate 1541-II flash cart looks good. Dunno if I should get one :P

Still have my HACK games that was use in a CAB.
ex: in MsPacman, it says originally hit "F1" for play, I change it using a HEX editor (forgot the name, I think it was Renegade, or was it Warp Speed) to say, Hit "Player one Button to Play".
I did some games, but then it got tiring and killing lots of time. I dunno/forgto how many I did.

I made a CAB out of DK cab and shove in the gutted C-64 and wired up the keyboard (hack it) to the controls. This was all done before MAME was even born.

Nice. Yea the Ultimate 1541-II carts are nice. They just emulate the floppy drive so you are still playing the game on the original hardware. The only issue with them is the price and the wait. When you order one you get put on a waiting list..I have heard some people getting them within the month and other having to wait a few months. I believe the price is somewhere around $160, But I am just crazy enough to drop that kind of cash on it.  :)

 :applaud:

This is a lot cooler than previous C64 PC attempts. I remember checking out the "New Commodore" from the previous C64 license owners a couple years ago, and they pretty much were making PC's with c64 logos on the tower. It was kinda lame...

I really wish they had classic c64 joystick ports though. All they would need to do is mount one of these in there and it would be treated like a usb joystick:

Hmm. So it's basically a PC housed in a case designed to look like a Commodore 64. That's not meant as a criticism. I think it's an inspired idea.

What I really miss about 80s home computers is their form factor. Most of them were basically large keyboards with all the components stuffed inside. That made them fairly portable. However, they were generally much better made and had far superior keyboards to most computers made today.

If they can combine those qualities with the power and flexibility of a modern PC then they could be on to a winner. I'm considering building a media PC and I'd much rather house it in one of these C64 cases that a standard overpriced media PC case.

I'm not that bothered about the emulation. I'd probably mostly just use it as a modern PC. The fact that it looks like an old C64 is just a whimsical bonus for me.

However, I'm a bit concerned that all they've produced so far is a CAD mockup of the final product and a prototype built using a 3D printer. There are also no details of pricing and availability. Not a good sign. We've has 20 years of broken promises and vapourware associated with the Commodore brand. I really hope this turns out to be the exception.

That's a good point.  Any one of us could get a real C64 and do that to it faster than these guys will produce anything tangible.

I miss my C64, I had a tape drive drive and a floppy drive the whole nine. There was an amazing bowling game, that had a neat ping pong game on the other side of the floppy. Also had a near arcade perfect version of pacman. I used to could get to the 5th key and higher on that.  Anyone remember KinderComp / Spinnaker ? I used make the boy zot the girl, lol.

I used to like to play Dr. J vs Bird, Mail Order Monsters, and Swiss Family Robinson on my friend's C64. He also had this dirty German game called Party Girls that consisted of rocking the joystick back and forth.

My c64 has developed a video flicker. I'm guessing it just needs new capacitors, but I don't think I want worry about keeping the C64 alive when all my games can be emulated. Something like this would be way cool to as long as I had a way to use my original joysticks and paddles. It would be even more badass if it accepted old floppies and cartridges instead of the DVD drive (I had very few cassette games)

I know, I'm asking for way too much...

Just a few things you guys might not be aware of

a Mini ITX was installed into a C64 years ago so the idea isn't that new but then again people have been this stuff for years now like the NES pc etc
http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/c64/

I never knew about it untill a few years ago but there was a C64 portable (No Battery) that had the keyboard clip into the front of the face then clip off to reveal the 5" screen and drives which for way back then i think is pretty damn cool

That would be a great machine to stick a PC in if the system didn't work or wasn't fixable it be a shame to wreck a working C64SX
