Happy Canadian Thanksgiving
« on: October 10, 2010, 06:56:06 pm »
All you hockey lovin' syrup sniffin' ---daisies---.

What are your plans? The holiday is on the monday but most people do it the friday or saturday. I did mine on the friday night, very untraditional meal. Me, the fiance, and another couple. We melted raclette cheese over potatoes with fried sausage slices, grilled vegetables, and a fine wine. It was about as fancy as it gets for me. I didn't even wear a hat. After dinner we watched Garfield's Thanksgiving Special [I have it on DVD] for nostalgia's sake, and then we had some pumpkin pie and chatted around the old arcade joystick in a puzzle-bobble championship. My fiance won, it was a landslide.

Due to extensive family, we ended up rolling through four turkey dinners over Sunday and Monday. Technically, it was two turkey luncheons and two turkey dinners. But we skated off a lot of the damage with some late night pick-up ice hockey down at the half-rink.

My Wife made the most AMAZING turkey last night - 22lbs, and even the white meat was moist and delicious.  I ate too much.

So much turkey....I'm feeling the Thanksgiving "haze" today. Now to do it all over again in November!
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving Canada

Too much turkey not enough time to eat it all.

I asked a Canadian work colleague why Canada would celebrate Thanksgiving. He said Canadians love any excuse for a holiday  :D

No need to get confrontational Rick. Danny's comment wasn't even an insult. Yes, just like anyone else in the world, Canadians like an excuse not to work. :)
But in truth, Canada has had pilgrims just like the US -- this land was settled/colonized around the same time for both countries. It just gets colder sooner up here, so we gotta have our harvest in October. But it's the same up for us canucks, giving thanks, eating turkey, time with the family, football and/or hockey.

...and btw, Arbor Day (Arbor week, for you Ontario folks. Maple Leaf Day for the rest of Canada) kicks ass! I'm sure any Canadian would agree, a holiday dedicated to restoring our forests sounds more applicable and responsible, than celebrating something silly and outdated like Victoria Day.
But then again, any excuse not to work is good stuff! :lol

Sorry - didn't mean for my comment to come off as anything more than fun asshattery.  I should have remembered the cardinal rule of the Internet - 'tone' cannot be reproduced effectively.

arbor day sounds more important to me than some stuff that happened in the past. it's more... in the present. but as stated, any day I don't have to work is a good day!

More importantly, any day that you get paid not to work is a good day!

I am self-employed. The good is that I'm the boss. The bad is I don't make money on stat holidays. Boo-urns!

Also, neither of you may realise I am in Australia. All I knew about Thanksgiving was something about English pilgrims from the Mayflower or summink  ;D
