And there you have the #1 reason I don't participate in those online leader boards.

Eh, leaderboards are still fun just to see how you do agianst your own friends.

Not to mention...

There is no way to NOT participate. You play the game, and you have automatically participated.

Unless you are saying that you have the game on the Wii and don't even have online at all.

I'm 2/3ds of the way through this and I'm pretty happy with it and think it's a huge step in the right direction for sonic. It does have some faults though.

The physics are a bit off but not so much they kill it or anything. There are some unsonic like moments like the moving wall section and the graphics could have been updated a bit more. And the biggest one is that they rehashed some levels from previous soic games. That was to be expected though. Over all I'm having a great time with it. If they fix some of these things for episode two we could be in for something really great next year.

The only really bad things are that it took 16 years and ended up being episodic rather than a full disc release. Sonic's back and it's about damn time.

I was referring to games in general that have online leaderboards.  I do not yet have Sonic 4.

And yeah, as pointdablame mentioned, I don't participate by just never checking them.

$15 though is very steep, I think , for no more new than what they brought to the table, and for as goofy as Sonic looks to me in movement - would have been far better priced at 800 - 1000 pts.

Agreed..  a total of $60..  and you just know that after they release all 4 installments they're going to release it on a disc and screw everyone.

I'm good with the demo until there's some sort of package deal or disc

Sonic Fan Remix looks better than Sonic 4.. Sega got pretty lazy with background art and details compared to this game.

I disagree, that fan remix is WAY too busy.  I much prefer the art style of Sonic 4; It's traditional but pretty.

Personally, I was bored with Sonic after the first one.

I prefer the Adventure games on Dreamcast to the originals. The originals were okay, but never quite hooked me.

that emerald hill montage looks great but looks like there is too much going on in the background.  Makes it kinda hard to focus on Sonic.

Agreed..

Sonic= Poor man's Super Mario Bros.
Sonic Adventures= Poor man's Mario 64

The genesis era was the worst because the levels were specifically designed so that you would pick up speed (which I thought was the whole point of a sonic game) just to have a rock or enemy placed in your path.  Sonic's controls were always sketchy so at least 50% of the time the obstacle was unavoidable, you get hit... lose your rings.... go to collect them and backtrack 4 screens just to get up enough speed to go through a loop only to hit another roadblock and start the whole process over!

It's not that the games were bad, they just weren't that good.  While the nostalga bug has definately caught me once or twice, I never have understood why such a mediocre franchise has such a cult following.  There is a reason sega lost the console war guys. ;)

That being said, I played sonic 4... it's terrible.... same poor controls and level design, but even more insulting is the fact that they barely updated the graphics at all.  It looks like a fan-made game!  Couple that with the high price tag and stupid, episodic format and it's an instant pass.    Ironically the actual fan made game is nice and looks very professional!  I still have issues with the gameplay, but I'm not a fan and I realize that the controls are at least sonic accurate, more so than sonic 4.

For those that take issue with the graphical style of the fan-made game, I think you are confused as to what is "off" about it.  It isnt' too busy, it's the color pallette.  Soinc games are supposed to be radioactive!  The fan made game has many dark, bland pallettes.  It's a style decision that I don't agree with, but it still looks better than sonic 4.

Actually in the SNES/Genesis days, Sega at one point held more market share than Nintendo.  The reason the lost the console wars because of 32X, Sega CD and Sega Saturn.  When it was JUST the Genesis, they were rocking it pretty hard.  Even the Dreamcast was great, it just suffered from 'Too little, too late'.

Downloaded the Sonic Fan Remix and I'm so glad that I didn't buy Sonic 4..  Yeh Sonic 4 is pretty and colorful but sorry not getting my $15.  I played through the Fan Remix and it really just makes the people who did Sonic 4 look lazy or like they just rushed it..   I mean come on, you got this huge orca whale that jumps out of the background, busts through a wall, flies over your head as you run by, and disappears somewhere into the foreground!  Meanwhile a huge Robotnic robot flying in the background through the entire level!  Why is this guy not getting paid by Sega??  It's just becoming sad because the fans are putting out better games/ideas than the game companies...  Anyone else seen that Mega Man 2.5D, another awesome fan made game

While graphically pretty, I think that all of that flashy stuff from the Fan Remix just made the screen very busy and detracted from actual gameplay.

I think you may be off a lil on this.

The Genesis was released before the SNES, and at that time when it was NES v Genesis v 7800 Pro System, the Genesis KILLED them both, and a year or two later the SNES came out and it didn't take long for Nintendo to regain their lost market share.  You're right that the 32X and the SegaCD were some of the first nails in the Sega Coffin, but it wasn't just the SNES they were trying to compete with.  Also it may be noteworthy if you look at the release dates of everything the 32X may have been successful if it wasn't for the young and upstart SONY PLAYSTATION, which was released at the same time in Japan.

By the time the 32X was released Sega had already lost the console wars, perhaps they just didn't know it.

Also, about the DreamCast, it would have been more successful if it wasn't for the head of Sega of America saying that the Sega Saturn was a "STILL BORN" when it was released.  This lack of confidence led to third-party developers not wanting to work with Sega anymore, the "if you don't believe in your product why should I" mentality sat in and when the DreamCast came out, which is on PAR if not BETTER than the PS2, nobody wanted to develop for it.

In Japan the DreamCast had a much longer life than it did in North America or Europe.

In many ways Sega's internal power struggles also severely damaged the public image of the company.  If a country's government looks like it may be overthrown within the few months that country's currency value (compared to the world) will drop sharply and may never recover.  The same applies to corporations and is what happened to the Sega Corporation.

the saturn was the start of the downfall of SEGA (it cost them more then a quarter billion dollars, and a third of its work force). The surprise E3 launch caught game devs with their pants down (this was all before the intertoobs was all the rage) and it was hard to develop for. I love my sega saturn, its still hooked up, but it was the kick to the nuts that started the downfall. Dreamcast is prolly the best system ever, but piracy REALLY killed it (I was guilty of bootdisking and eventually patching bin files into self booting CDI files)

the 32X certain didnt help but not much money was flushed down that toilet (I had the Sega 32X CD combo and there wasnt a single game that made it worth having)

Also, every system has a longer lifespan in Japan

back to sonic.... I kind of agree with Casto, except I never back tracked I just tried to hold 1 ring till the end, cause thats all you needed to not die. Sonic Spinball wasnt all bad, but I stand by my original statement of Sonic CD was my fave =)

What are you talking about?  The Genesis sold like CRAP at first.  It didn't gain a lead in market share over Nintendo untill the 1993.  Sega held a 55% market share over Nintendo through 1994 even.

The Genesis was on the map before Sonic came out.  Many of us had the Altered Beast pack-in.  They had some really effective commercials (remember "Genesis Does What Nintendon't"?)  Of course, you're right - not killer numbers compared to the NES - but I wouldn't put it in the same boat as other poor selling consoles.  Once Sonic came out, that's when the ball started really rolling.

I agree with Casto.  I like playing the games on occasion but if you run really fast you just end up getting hit.  So you proceed cautiously and it becomes dull quick.  Oddly I can run through levels in Super Mario the way I wish I could have with Sonic.

Sonic has never been good.  Sonic 1 was not a good game.  It is a retarded game for all the reasons HC mentioned.  Add to that the most obnoxious and repetitive music and sound effects in the history of videogames and you have a . . . um . . . obnoxious and repetitive retarded game.  Sonic was all marketing . . . showing that Sega was edgy and hardcore while Nintendo was just for kids.  Also retarded . . . Sonic . . . edgy . . . lmao.  I'm no fanboy.  My Wii is modded and I have every good game available for it, yet have only turned it on like three times since I modded it at least half a year ago.  Sonic just sucks and always has.
