Ok, apart from arcade cabs / jukes, what else have you all built! I know most people on here get the "tinkering" bug once you build your first cab so what else have you put your mind too ?

I was debating building a boat for my next project or maybe a easy kit car but looking for a few other ideas first ? Hovercraft maybe ?

I'll try to take some pics of the sea lab.   It's driven by an LEDWiz.   The bed is all custom made too.   Very complex Formica work.   I don't think I'd ever try it again.

Not familiar with the water fall screen.   There is a water caustics lighting effect too, though.

I purchased the parts from a professional model maker.  Most were cast off of originals with the exception of the engine block which he scratched.  So by comparison, I didn't do much, just like showing him off.

Besides "an ass out of yourself", as my wife would say  

• I've done a lot of stonework: dry laid fieldstone retaining walls, large cobblestone patio with fireplace and the gardens next to it.
• completely rebuilt our fireplace and surround when I remodeled the living room/family room
• turned our 2 car garage under into a rocking home theater and game room (80% complete)
• floating dock system for our cottage
• step stools that look like whales for the kids when they were toddlers
• birch and oak train table with roll out drawers.  If you flipped the top over it revealed Lego base plates for building. Just sold that on CL actually for a very nice price.
• and I spend so much time working our old boat, I feel I've actually (re)built it!

And the most important thing? My son. Awesome kid. Well adjusted, well mannered, smart, musical. Of course ask me about him next year as the hormones kick in full geAR and I'll probably wanting to be applying my foot to his rear-end...

Here's the rest of the XBMC string - the displays aren't quite right anymore - the livingroom has been upgraded to a Samsung 46" LED LCD, and the 42" moved to the master bedroom.  The master's plasma moved to the guest room (no pics).  Yes, I like toys, have no kids (but a very understanding wife), and more money than sense sometimes 

Need a beverage?  Go to the wet bar just outside the theater and keep watching the show


Or head up to the living room and relax with a smaller screen


Retire to the bedroom and never miss a show


You can even stay on top of the show while making dinner in the kitchen


And when I need to go do some work in the home-office, I still have my trusty old 8-year old 42" Panasonic TH-42PWD5UY plasma (and a bunch of toys)


Every screen you see is driven by the same set of components in the server room / wiring closet.  The theater is a special case and has a dedicated touchscreen Pronto remote and digitial audio/surround.  For every other room the signal is distributed throughout the house using component video + stereo audio.  Each room has a flat-panel on the wall and a Harmony 880 remote - nothing else.  I like to think of it as a 'zero footprint' installation.  I use a Xantech IR distribution system to keep everything in control and an Extron Matrix50 component video distribution matrix to route all the signals.

XBMC is the icing on the cake!:D

XBMC - definitely one of the best HTPC interfaces out there.  www.xbmc.org

I made this custom desk a while back. It's basically a tabletop on a motorized lifting base, so I can program standing or sitting... All Hardwood (red oak), and slate tiles with about 2 gallons of epoxy.

Not a huge deal, but it was fun.



even more fun were these steampunk nerf guns I did back about a year ago.



I love that Home theater setup. The Panasonic projectors are just flat awesome in my book. I've got the slightly older ptae900u, it does 1080i, but I honestly can barely tell the difference between it and 1080p.

They seem to do a very good job of zooming various formats to fit a 16x9 screen ratio. Of course, I'm no HT buff, so don't listen to me on that sort of thing!

Thanks for the comments about the boat guys. I loved/love that boat. I sold it in July as I couldn't keep up with the mooring fees. I built it to live on, but subsequently met my wife and moved in with her. The mooring fees started becoming crazy (£4650 / $7150 per year at last billing) so I had no choice but to let it go. Still very sad.

I commissioned Peter Nicholls Yacht builders to carry out the steelwork and I built and fitted everything else (wiring, plumbing, heating, carpentry etc)

About 3.5 years working most evenings during the week from about 7pm to 10/11pm and all day Saturday and Sunday from about 8am to whenever I started falling asleep. Also every day of my holidays from work so 25 days a year on top. I always took off Bank holidays, Christmas and my Birthday though. It would have been finished quicker but my arthritis really slowed me down on things like wiring and plumbing.

i've seen cowhide printed up with zebra stripes as flooring, not cheap though, and maybe not that good for a drum carpet but i dont know what a drum carpet needs to be like in honesty, looks good though

Just a durable carpet. I may have to buy a big ass area rug for the riser. Drums have spikes that dig in so they don't move around; I just installed a hardwood floor. There really are no requirements other than it being zebra patterned... sure the thought of it drips cheese but it will fit in perfectly.

i'm a big fan of animal prints so you don't need to convince me, this is the hide thing i was on about link, im sure it'd be durable but its more than im sure most bands spend on their drum carpet, but hey youre building a studio cant imagine that comes cheap so whats a few hunderd extra on a nice rug

I'm no acoustic expert but here's what I know-
There are three basic types of subwoofer enclosure; direct radiator, ported or vented, and horn. You're probably familiar with the first two. Horn enclosures are designed to maximize the specs of the driver with optimal airpressure throughout the horn path, or something like that. The big advantage of horns is their efficiency. They filter out nasty harmonics and get the most from your driver. The downside is they are complicated to try and design from scratch (I got plans for mine) and they are big. But it's very worth it. The type that I built would be called a folded or tapered horn since the horn flare is folded within the box to keep the overall length down to 6'. Unfolded the horn length would be something like 16'.

I'm a big fan of modifying stuff, no matter what it is, it can always be changed to be unique ^^

When I moved out from my parents I got an old white table with tiles in the center, painted it, smashed the tiles and replaced it with a box and a glass-top.


Then I went on and restored and modified a couple of speakers I got from my dad (from the early 80's the sound is to good to be tossed away).
From the start they where dark gray with a wood pattern and with black cloth in front. Now painted in a highgloss black and with white fabric in front.


And when modifying isn't enough, you got to design and build something from scratch, right?
Built in MDF and then spray painted with a highgloss black color. Inside there was a PS2 and a Nintendo 8-Bit, cables where run through the base and beneath the sofas, so now cables where visible from the games to the TV.

And from there Iv'e built yet another (smaller simpler) coffee-table (the black one didn't fit in between my new couch) (http://www.minhembio.com/Broberg/207377/), built some shelfs, modified a kitchen table, reupholstered a couple of kitchen chairs, made a knife handle for a small hunting knife etc etc. Try everything at least once!
And yes I've built an arcade cab with two hacked retro amiga-joysticks and a hacked keyboard, but the cab looks terrible so I won't showcase it.

Right now I'm in the process of finishing the new shell for my HTPC (made in 2mm steel, heavy ).

Made this doorbell today.  Solid stainless steel.  We are installing a storm door and it will only leave a little space for the doorbell on the brick molding.  Couldn't find anything I liked so I made this.  Stainless steel is hard to machine, especially when its 3/8" thick.

Yeah I know what you mean.  He goes through maybe 5 decks per year.   I was really angry when the first deck wore out in a couple of months but now I know it is just part of the sport if you are serious.  Shoes are almost as bad.  I have a daughter in dance though and skateboarding is still much cheaper.

Funny story about grind rails. When we had our board shop we bought up a BUNCH for the 'vet' skateboarders hehe. We bought so damn many of them that our supplier (the biggest skateboard supplier in the world) started to buy them back from us. lol Old school baby, oh hell yea, we were.
