Can you mount a WG monitor vertically?
« on: August 01, 2003, 04:52:41 pm »
...and still have it work properly?

The reason I ask is:
I just got a Frenzy cabinet that had a monitor that was about 13" wide and 18" tall...and the CGA WG monitors that I am looking at (19" now because I dont think the 25" will fit) are wider than they are taller...and I am wondering if that will be too small for the cab. The cab is 24" wide.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

Either way it's the same monitor. The only difference is the casing. It's just rotated. It should work just fine.

is there a setting so the picture reorients itself to the verticle placement, or is the picture sideways?

It's like a regular TV. If you turned it on its side the picture would be sideways. On the other hand, if you tried to play a vertical game on a horizontal monitor it would also come out sideways.

You see? A monitor is just a monitor. You either turn it up on its side or you leave it horizontal.

AlanS17, I apologize for not phrasing this correctly. Let me try again.

Some arcade monitors are taller than they are wide. For me to achieve this setup, there must be at least two options:
1. Get a monitor that is set up this way (narrow & tall)
2. Rotate a 'regular' monitor 90 or 270 degrees so that it is sideways, and then somehow change the signal to ajust for this new orientation.

Now my questions are:
1. Where can I find a tall monitor from option #1 ?
2. Can I do option #2 with a regular monitor/software/doggle/etc. ?

There is no such thing as a "vertical monitor". Well there is, but it's still the same as a horizontal monitor. If you take a horizontal monitor and turn it on its side then it's a vertical monitor. There are really no technical modifications you have to make to it. Just makes sure it fits when you turn it.

So, for arcade games with "taller" monitors, did they output the signal "sideways"?

I think your asking if MAME support it to go sideways. Yes it does, just read the DOC for MAME about ROLD/ROR flipy/flipx etc...

ahhh, now that makes total sense...is there any way to do that with a MAME machine...perhaps arcadeVGA or something? That would probably allow me to put a 25 or even 27 inch monitor in my 23 inch wide cab...  ;D

19" monitors are standard on 24" wide cabinets. You can squeeze in a 25" one mounted horizontally, or a 27" one mounted vertically.

But, you might not be happy with it. It depends on how close the monitor is to your face. Those older cabs were designed with 19" monitors in mind.*

* Go play one of the new 25" Namco Reunion machines and you will see what I am talking about, it is hard to see the whole screen at once.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Thenasty, thanks for the MAME support answer - we posted at the same time  ;)

paigeoliver, good info, thank you. My cab must have had a 19" mounted vertically.

I really like this forum - so much good info!
