Marquee light & rear panel key (Punch-Out machine)
« on: February 20, 2010, 01:20:39 pm »
Total rookie here - I helped my friend track down a Punch-Out machine to put in the barber shop he's opening up. Cosmetically it's in pretty decent shape and the controls are better than I expected considering I don't think the guy we bought it from has done a thing to keep it in in good condition. There's definitely going tbe some work that needs to be done over time, though.

First issues I'm trying to resolve are the marquee light replacement and getting the rear door panel open. I checked with a place that sells arcade games/parts around here and he said they replace the entire fixture usually rather than just the light since the light can be difficult to track down. We checked Home Depot but didn't have much luck. Anyone know where we can find a replacement that would work, or more importantly which fixture/light we should purchase?

Second issue is the rear door panel key, which the previous owner does not have. It's the usual K6510 lock that Nintendo games all seemed to use. I went to the manufacturer's website (which doesn't let you order if using the English site) and asked if there was a place in the area that sells Takigen products so I could get a key for it, but no response yet. When I contacted the previously mentioned arcade retailer above, he said they usually just get the lock off by working on it with a screwdriver through the two grills on the left and right of the lock until they get it off, then replace the lock. Does this seem like it would be the best approach (no guarantees we'd even be able to get it off), or does anyone know how I can get the correct K6510 key outside of pointing me to the Takigen site?

I went through the rigamaroll of having a takigen rep contact me and he ended up quoting me $183.50 for a set of 2 keys ($3.50 for they keys, $100 surcharge for an order under $1000, and $80 shipping).

I, of course, did not do that.  Cheapest I could find was an almost reasonable $34 bucks for 2 keys at RAS Machine Tool ($24 for the keys, $10 for shipping):

Before I went through with the order, I found a collector who was nice enough to offer me one of his spares for 10 bucks.  It was worth it to me in case I ever get another Nintendo cabinet and run into the same problem.

He's all out of K6510s, but he's got replacement locks available for cheap.

No reason to replace the whole unit.  I can't remember the bulb that was in my Punch-Out!!, but if it's not your standard bulb, then you can get a replacement at Topbulb.  I got one for my Donkey Kong there.

Assuming they are the same bulbs as Donkey Kong, here are you links:

Pick up a starter while you are ordering.

I appreciate the responses. The Takigen rep got back to me and would sell me the key for under 4 bucks...with a 100 dollar shipping charge, of course  :D . I just wound up having my brother come in (who is very handy) and pry the back off, he was able to do it without damaging it. We wrenched the lock into a more agreeable position, which is fine for now. We mainly needed to get into it ASAP because his shop opened this past Monday and we needed to turn the volume down, the difficulty down and the quarter play on.

Thanks for the links Spyridon, I'll check it out. I'd wager it is the same bulb you got...same time period, same company.
