New york and florida
« on: February 18, 2010, 08:07:42 pm »
Figured this would be a good place to ask seeing as theres so many yanks on here!

Myself and the other half are getting married in Italy in June and were looking to go for our honeymoon to New York and Florida. We're from Ireland so will probably fly from Italy home to Ireland then to US.

I'm looking for things to do in New York for 3 days/nights before flying to florida. Maybe end up doing the whole disney Epcot thing. We will probably stay in florida for a week. We're looking for things to do there aswell.

I'm open to anything just not too boring!

Thanks

Can I make a suggestion?

How about a nice trip to Florida just the two of you via Amtrak.  Get to see the sights, have privacy and enjoy the east coast.

I know it sounds odd, but flying from Italy, the wedding and running around NY for 3 days, the flight to Miami... will get tiring.  It takes 28 hours, enough time to relax on your honeymoon.   ;D

No I don't work for Amtrak

Throw a stick in New York and you'll find something to do  :)

But just keep in mind New York is the "Big City". If you get into that scene, you'll love it. Me, I'm a native Texan and am not at all into big city life. New York was mostly crowded and irritating to me.

Florida's much nicer in my book. Definitely try to get out to the swamps in fl. Maybe do an airboat tour, something like that. Also, if you can make it down to the keys, that's a VERY laid back way to go, though. Might be a little boring unless your into that.

And you +HAVE+ to do NASA Cape Canaveral if you're in FL and can talk the better half into it. Just getting to walk around one of the shuttle crawlers is worth the trip!

Just a few ideas anyways...

Congratulations!

Wife and I took a trip up the East Coast on Amtrak - *hated* it. Train stopped repeatedly in the middle of the night with people getting on and off waking us up (we were in a private sleeper berth). Food in the dining car was less than memorable. The berth we were in was cramped and not conducive to "honeymooning" ... Not the memorable romantic train ride we were anticipating. We were up for an adventure, but it was just annoying. I don't know if Amtrak has different types of trains than what we were on but it wasn't anything I'd do again or recommend...

Can I point out that you said this:
Maybe end up doing the whole disney Epcot thing.
And then you said this:

Unless you're over 50, Epcot isn't exactly exciting.

If you're afraid the other Disney parks are too kid oriented, don't be. Their parks are magical for all.
NO MORE!!

Thanks for replies all! Absolutely delighted to hear that!  ;D

The reason we were going to stop in New York is because it takes 14+ hours with a stopover to go from Ireland to Florida. After the whole wedding thing and traveling, its a bit too long to do it in 1 go.

The Amtrak thing is a good idea, but I don't think she would go for it for a honeymoon. Maybe another time, doing stopovers in each place would be great but alot of hassle.

Amtrak does suck.   I took a sleeper car from Miami to North Carolina.  In the U.S. no one wants to live near a train track.   Your scenery through most developed areas consist of industrial parks or slums.

And the accommodations are cramped as mentioned.

Also, I live about 40 minutes from Disney.   Epcot is a great place.  My wife and I enjoyed it a lot before we had kids.   Some of the best restaurants in the Orlando area are at Epcot.

When I was in NY we bought tickets for the "hop-on-hop-off" tour bus. That was fun. There are lots of great museums in NYC also. If you have the money you can go to a Broadway show. That costs $$$$$$.

Disney is fun for adults as well as kids. If you go there, I would stay on the property and get the Fast Pass tickets.

In the US we drive on the right side of the road, so be careful if you are driving. I made my wife drive when we visited the UK because driving on the left made me nervous.

Yeah, but in the US, we don't have roundabouts. Those things messed my right the heck up when I was in the UK the first time. It didn't help that the boss handed +me+ the keys to the only stickshift car he'd rented (he goes "Well, +I'm+ definitely not driving a stick over here!")  :)

Left hand drive, left hand shift, driving on the left.

I'm still surprised I didn't get pulled over that first trip.

I'm well used to driving on the right from holidays in Europe! I drive in Italy and those crowd are completely mentally disturbed behind the wheel. Can't understand how you guys don't use roundabouts! It must take you forever to get anywhere ?

I like the idea of a broadway show. Any seen any good ones?  We want a holiday with no stress so having as much of this booked before hand would be ideal! Will def do that hop-on-off bus tour!

for New York, if you're staying for like 2-3 days, you can do some tourist things...

bway shows..... the famous ones... like phantom, les Mes, or lion king...
or off bways...... like blue man group, or stomp are pretty fun...

do some shopping / or window shopping on 5th ave.... if you're from the suburbs...
window shopping on 5th ave for a few hours on all the big stores would be cool....
(that's if ur lady doesn't go completely nuts....)

visit empire state building.... (well... not that impressive... but its a tourist thing...)

if you have not seen avatar, then go to lincoln square IMAX theater to watch it...

depends on what you're into, if you're into music / jazz, you can try some jazz clubs at night,
or comedy clubs...

or if you're willing to spend, pick a signature restaurant, and have a dinner there...

of course there are a lot of museums.....
as a guy, I personally like natural history....
(I can easily spend a day there...)
but a lot of ppl like Metropolitan also.... and there are tons more....
