I thought I lost my cat the other day. Since I moved into my new place I have a pretty large yard on a not-very-busy street, so I let my cats out. They're much happier. The other night I woke up at about 3 or 4 a.m. to a barely audible constant cry. I immediately went and checked my baby girl, but she was sound asleep. When I came back in my bedroom, my movements woke my wife and I asked if she could hear it. She said that she was sure she had let both Simon and Penelope back in the house before we went to bed, but I was still curious so I went and opened the front door, but as soon as I did, the cry was drowned out by the chirping of crickets. Seeing as whatever it was, it wasn't one of my cats or my little girl I locked back up and went to bed. A few minutes later there was a full-on cat screech (typical cat-fight noise). It only lasted a few seconds, though.
When I woke up the next morning, Simon was not in the house, and we couldn't find him. It is completely abnormal for either of my cats to not go nuts at feeding time in the morning and night, but he was nowhere to be seen no matter how loud I called. I felt bad for not going after him. The sound that woke me was barely audible. I should have known that it wouldn't have woke me if it wasn't my cat (I am a selective deep sleeper -- I can sleep through ABSOLUTELY anything, but if my wife whispers my name, or my daughter makes any kind of noise that could indicate distress, or the CD in my alarm clock starts spinning up to get ready to wake me, I wake immediately).
I was home all day, and searched the yard multiple times, and walked around the block with my little girl calling for him. I went to the neighbor's house who has two big, aggressive dogs and asked to look around his back yard, but my cat wasn't there. We were really worried that he had a run-in with a wild animal, maybe a possum or an alligator. My cat is neutered and has never, in all his nine years gone on an out-of-yard adventure.
But that night he showed up. He was just laying on the front porch like nothing had ever happened. He didn't seem hungry. He wasn't dirty. I couldn't find any injuries. I think probably he did run into a predator, whether an alligator or just a very big dog, but it just scared him bad enough to run off and stay away for a day. I still let them out, though. I know that they may get killed, by an animal or a car, but they are much much happier and healthier cats since they've been able to go outside.
