Install Help - Coin Door Mechanics/Switch Connections
« on: October 08, 2006, 01:49:36 am »
Hi all,

I have a standard over-under coin door and need some help hooking this thing up to my IPAC controller. Any ideas?

See picture below.

How does a coin door really work? When I put a coin into the mechanism, it holds the coin up top (aka user has entered a CREDIT or hit '5' key on KB) When user selects Player 1 button, doesn't that need to trigger this coin to drop down into the lower bucket and be taken from the user? Likewise if the user pushed COIN RETURN ... how does the computer register the event of removing the CREDIT?

Maybe I am overcomplicating it, but can't this type of coin door be used in the traditional sense and map nicely to the IPAC?

Also, my coin door has a TOGGLE, a push BUTTON and a COUNTER, in addition to SWITCH #1 and #2. Any idea how to hook all of this together?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)

when you put a coin in it "drops" through the mech and triggers the switch labeled number 2 in your pic and registers a credit like the 5 key. That credit is now ready to be used which is what happens when you press the start button.

Yes the ipac has no problem with it.

"from your pic, "switch #1" appears to be the light for the coin reject button.  The toggle switch is for a test or service mode on the original PCB and will not be used with mame. The push button on mine adds credits, also for the original pcb. Forget the coin counters.

[johnm160] Oops, you are correct - switch #1 is the light, doh! And to think I am an electrical engineer! Do you have any idea on the VOLTAGE requirements for this light? You think my USB 5V will work?

See what happens when you stay up to 3am, 2 nights in a row working on this silly stuff?  :)

Ok, with that said, I have a follow-up question.

The coin does not actually reach Switch #2 (in my case) it is "held" in some sort of middle spot and can either...
   (a) be pushed to the side with a mechanical arm from the COIN RETURN
     or
   (b) go thru the Switch #2 to the big drop box below

I can't seem to make it do anything but do a COIN RETURN. I would think if you hit the PLAYER 1, somehow that act of hitting PLAYER 1 actually TAKES the coin and sends it through Switch #2.

See picture below of this HOLD of the coin ahead of Switch #2.

Do you think my Over Under is non-standard and won't work with an IPAC setup?

The coin mech in your picture is rejecting the coin, so the type of coin you put in there is not correct.  It's probably a token mech.

Yep, what johnnya said. it is the wrong coin. I would not try to power the lights with usb....The PC power supply is where I would go. I use 12 volt bulbs in mine because as a former auto tech. The ones in my Rampage machine are actually 5 volts AC I would have never though it was AC. But for mame I grab the 12 volt DC line from the power supply and use 194 automotive bulbs.

it could be a WRONG size COIN/TOKEN, and it could be the right size. It could just be that you need to adjust (the middle where a magnet is enclosed) where that coin/token is getting stuck such in your pic.
If a coin/token is smaller, it jsut falls right thru the return slot, and if the coin is way to big, it sits on top where the cradle and does not let the coin/token swing and reach the middle (where the magnet is, like in pic).

Ok, so turns out the reason my coin (25cents) isn't working is due to the fact I did not stand the coin door vertical ... instead, it was slanted backward as I set it on the floor. DOH!

When I stand the coin door up-right, it works just fine and I tested with a multimeter the switch when the quarter drops down through and it works great.

The other thing I learned is that a traditional coin door does not HOLD the coin in a temporary slot to allow for the customer to COIN RETURN --or-- PLAYER 1 select. Once a person drops the coin into the mech, it is supposed to take it completely and register the CREDIT.

Thanks everyone for the help.  :)

In a happ over under, or at least the one I got my hands on, the lamp is a 12v automotive tail lamp.  I bought my replacement lamps in the automotive section at Canadian Tire (local hardware chain store) based on the number printed on the bulb.  I powered them from the PC.  I have a case fan for my cabinet, the two 12v lamps, and the 12v relay in my power bar connected to the 12v power supply in the PC, so they all come on as soon as the PC is switched on.  The receptacles in the power bar, which are switched by the relay, turn on the marquee luminaire, my monitor and my speakers.
