Fix it Felix Jr. Wall mount/Bar top
« on: November 24, 2013, 09:29:29 am »
I wanted to show off my latest creation, a Fix it Felix Jr. that I plan to mount on the wall for my kids to use.  To make it thin and light enough to mount on the wall I used an old Dell 19" LCD monitor (4:3 aspect ratio, mounted in the vertical orientation) instead of a CRT.  It uses a ultra small form factor PC (HP Compaq dc7900 with Core2 Duo, 3 GHz processor) that runs Windows 7 which I bought from Tiger Direct for $150 for this purpose.  It boots directly to Fix it Felix Junior.  The panel below opens by pushing on it to reveal two buttons.  One can be pressed to exit the app.  After exiting pressing the green button launches MAME which has selection of games that can be played with this monitor orientation and controls (e.g. Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-man, qix, and many others).  Pressing the red button and player 1 together shut down the machine.

I'm running the "leaked" version that I found out about on the hyperspin forum.  I have it set up to run on start up from an AHK script that resizes the screen, hides the mouse, sets the keys to work with my joystick, etc.  I recently tried the hacked version that was posted on software page of this forum that apparently fixes the high score issues but I couldn't get it to work right with my joystick or center properly on my screen.

I really like the wall mount idea.
I've been toying with the idea of making a junior version arcade for my son but I think the wall mount might be the better option.
I remember seeing a couple if wall mount cabs back some years ago but they just weren't that inspiring. This is cool thanks.

I'm a big fan of wall mounted designs, as they are a great way to avoid the bulk of a stand up machine without compromising the size of the screen and controls.  This is the 4th wall mount I've built.  The other 3 can been seen on this tread:
