Asteroids build from scratch
« on: August 27, 2012, 04:22:19 am »
Hi,
it's hard to find a dedicated Asteroids-Cab in Germany (where I'am from) also the prices are very high. Therfore I would like to build a Cab from scratch, using MAME and a computer CRT-monitor.
Unfortunality I can't find the measure of the cab on the net. So if any body can give me a graph especially form the side part it would bve very helpful for me!

Am I missing something? with the plans? Do you have the measurements for A, B, C, E, G, H ???

and once again, if i'm reading it wrong, I apologize, I'd love to build an asteroids someday.....ahhhh someday, I'd like to build a juke, a pin, a cnc,,,,,lifes too short....

Thanks,
SB

Here's a link for artwork http://vectorlib.free.fr/Asteroids/
And the above plans http://vectorlib2.free.fr/Plans/vect/asteroid_cab.jpeg

Also if you're familiar with the program Sketchup there's a guy called Gozer who makes 3D builds of lots of arcade cabinets. Free to download. Here's the one he made for Asteroids.

You could load up the Asteroids file and use the measurement tool to get just about everything you'll need for your build.

Sketchup http://www.sketchup.com/intl/en/index.html

Gozer's cabinets http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=4ac3dc12784cb20bd06e6be4f8954ac

If you get stuck on anything, let me know. I've actually got an Asteroids upright and I can check measurements and whatnot if you run into any snags.

Great project idea. I'll be looking forward to seeing this come to life.

Forget that google sketch up crap.

If you want we can manage to make a real CAD simulation in Solidworks, the files can be imported in a CNC device and you get a puzzle you just have to assemble.

If you want to see some renderings go on Facebook and watch out for "the M.A.M.E.-project" and open the "Romans scratch built Karate Champ cabinet"

The point is that every single part is modellized in Solidworks and you see clearly if everythings matches perfectly when you assemble the parts.

In my SWX-simulations there is a real CRT inside and you also see the inner building. Also I provide a step by step manual how to build the cab with the parts from the parts list.

I try to load up a rendering, but the space here is very limited.

Feel free to contact me :)

Some more of dozens I have

It is accurate to the smallest detail, starting from the sheetmetal of the CP over the speaker slots to the bracket that holds the marquee in place.

I researched hundrets of images to find out every single detail.

The only points that are not original are

1 the buttom, I could not find details of the lower portion of the cabinet but had the impression that it stays on the sidepanels, what is a miss-design, thats why all Karate Champ-cabinets I ever found had horrible damage on the lower sidepanel. So I created a small (1cm) podest that lifts the sidepanels up, the T-Molding runs all around the sidepanel (by the way, I even simulated the T-Molding in the renderings, what is not easy).

2. the coindoor....since my friend that wanted that cab had some standard SEGA dual-coindoors at home I added that one, but will do the original some day.

3. the front and rear doors. Nobody can see it when its closed, but everybody can do it in another way, this is an easy task.
