Looking for Modern design for a Quad Cabinet Inspiration
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:57:15 pm »
Hey BYOAC trawlers,

It's been forever since I have been on the BYOAC forums - finally I got a bug again to build a new Arcade cabinet.  I have been asked to build a Mame cabinet for my baseball club (and yes we play baseball in Australia) the 'Bundoora Brumbies'.  So I decided to build a Quad Cabinet.  It will be fully customised for the club with commissioned art work of the teams logo.  I am pretty excited about the build.  So I am looking for a Modern take on a Quad cabinet.  I have trawled a few times through the forums to no avail.  If any of you know of a cool Modern Quad cabinet fire through the forum link.

Currently I have the Ultimate Arcade II plans - and I am just considering altering the curves.  One short fall I have it that I am not using an LCD - I already have a flat screen TV.

cheers,
Potts

With your skills, I would love to see you do something more original than a UAII based setup.  That design is pretty common around here.

Your previous machine was beautiful!  I expect something equally breathtaking for your next one.  ;)   (no pressure)

cheers Gamester !

It is a tough one - form or function ?  cause the UAII does work well.  By the way this is not going to be anywhere near as flashy as the last one baahahhaha (the secret is to set expectations low then over deliver for effect knuk knuk knuk).  I really don't know as yet - I think more curves might bring the UAII in the times.

cheers

Sorry but I have to agree with Gamester...go for form and function...why one without including the other?

You obviously have the skills so sketch up your take of a curvy UAII without seeing the blueprints ;)

Here is a render mockup - the sketch for the side artwork is of a Baseball player sitting on a wild horse (a Brumby) pointing his bat outwards.  I have attached an image of the character that will be on the Horse - currently I have commissioned the ZBrush artist Eoin Cannon to ZBrush model me the finished pose. As far as the cabinet goes apart from the obvious rounding off of all the UAII edges there isn't any design as yet.  Right now I am feeling hohum about the design - I will keep trying a few different things, I do want this to be a simple build.

I also had a cool idea to make the Joystick shafts out of hard wood and polished (look closely at render) - so it's like a baseball bat in your hand.  That idea I do love so if I can do it I will.

oh and before any of you kindly point out that there isn't any 4Ply Baseball games I know this  :P (unless I go the console route) - so I will be putting other mame games on this Arcade.

cheers

Not a bad take on the UAII design.  It's definitely a popular design, and there would be no shame at all in building it, but I'd sure love to see something more original.  You obviously have the skills to do so.

It's all easy for me to say though, since I'm not the one that will have to build it...  ;)

Looking forward to seeing what future revisions look like.

How about a back-to-back (head to head, really) setup - a 2-player CP with monitor and a mirrored setup on the other side (with both monitors running off a splitter on the computer output) 180degrees out of phase, in other words. I'd not be conventionally space friendly, but could work like a kiosk in the middle of a game room.

You could even rig two systems in it, having it run as 2 stand alone rigs - but then flip a couple of switches (usb switch for the KB encoder and a switch for the PC output) to change over to a head-to-head 4 player setup.

I don't know, that just popped into my little brain...
