He needs to be dragged behind a truck for several miles over crushed glass and barbed wire. And then the really bad stuff will happen.

Shouldn't a NeoGeo have four action buttons plus a start button?

I don't think its so bad. None of the art hacked, original bezel. All it needs is a control panel and marquee to appear correct.

The thing I can't comprehend is wanting to play any Neo Geo game over Defender.  ;)

This is easily restorable back to a Defender so I say no harm no foul. In fact it's these types of conversions that I will say is well done. How many It's comparable to seeing a crapload of Donkey Kongs that were kit'ed with Rastan "a non Nintendo title" just as this is not an Atari title.

This kind of a thread suprises me simply because this site promotes using classic machines for MAME. Not just MAME'd but heavily laden with black paint that ruins any chance of using the original stenciled artwork. But these machines get a thumbs up?

Bottom line - you can't save them all.

Not bad on the outside.
But I'm sure to restore what may be missing on the inside would mean to destroy yet another machine. These parts have to come from somewhere.

I wouldn't say it "promotes" the conversion of classics to MAME...... but it does encourage the use of otherwise already hacked up classics that are generally beyond the scope of "restoring", as in nothing much original left to them to begin with from earlier JAMMA conversions, etc. (which is usually where the black paint comes in)

Bottom line - you can't save them all.

This is true.
But it sure would be nice to think we could.
Trust me, I have some hacked up hopeless cabinets I'm still debating on whether it's worth "restoring" them or not.

I would have to disagree with this statement. This site promotes building your own machine. Hence the title BYOAC. Most members here highly discourage maming a classic unless it so far gone as to be not economically restorable or it has already been converted or mutilated and ruined for restoration.

There's still the fact that the CP only have three action buttons per player when a NeoGeo CP has four! D:

I know WHY he did it though. he's using a 1 slot mobo with a bootleg cart. 1 slot mobo is jamma (kinda) he didnt bother wiring the fourth button, prolly because he doesnt know how or care. most likely, care.  Also, that cab could be converted back.

Other than the fighting games, did any other Neo Geo games use all four? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Defender parts are every where - not hard to locate and are cheap. I will stand my ground and claim the shortage is not PCB's it is the lack of dedicated cabinets. And yes Williams not Atari ;)

And I'll retract the word promote and instead use the word encourage. Yes the name may be BYOAC but there are countless threads showing MAME machines that were made out of Stargates, Jousts, Track and Fields to name just a few of course. And the fact is these machines get "Oh wow awesome, way to go, cool" which is that not encouragement? I'm not saying the owners didn;t do a nice job on the cabinet - just pointing out a fact. How often does a remark of "You couldn;t have found a crappy JAMMA cabinet to use - or you should've sold it to someone and found another cabinet". It's your cabinet and you have EVERY right to do what you want with it ... back to the "can't save em all" mindset.

And FWIW - my MAME cabinet is actually a Defender cabinet that came from an OP that had a crapload of cabinets refurbished and all originality was lost in the process making it generic. However what few original Defender parts that actually came with it were either donated to a needy person or sold on eBay.

Mine was a Track and Field, but there was nothing left of Track and Field when I got it (other than the tag inside, which is still there). I wish I hadn't painted it black, though. :lol

No offense to you or anyone else my friend. I don't mean to come across as an ass ... I cherish our beloved classics and honestly, I believe with every fiber of my being that when a person paints over a stenciled cab the chances of that getting restored is not likely to happen. You have in essence assigned this machine to an early grave. Maybe not - it's just how I view this whole scenario.

Well, whoever Jamma'd this thing out and made it a Double Dribble is responsible for the early grave, not me. Also, the sideart wasn't a stencil.

You should see my hacked up - half assed JAMMA-tized used to be a VS. used to be a DK used to be a RadarScope red Nintendo cabinet that now also has a 25" monitor in it.
There ain't squat left in it Nintendo, might as well be an empty shell.
She ain't pretty that's for sure..... what to do, what to do ?   :P

But it's a prime example of "how far is too far gone" ?
And what to do with it now ?

No offense to you or anyone else my friend. I don't mean to come across as an ass ...

Same here...... just another way of looking at thing I guess.
Or at least looking at what's in front of you and deciding what to do with it from there.  ;)

It makes you think that at what point does it just become an empty shell of wood? Some would say that the Defender cabinet can be saved, but some would say that it is and always was just a shell of wood.

With a gutted cabinet, what's the point of restoring a hacked-up, painted-over, no-sign-of-the-original-electronics cabinet when you can get the blueprints form jakobud and the stencils from REDACTED?

Philosophy aside... that guy's nuts, order a Defender marquee and find a nice CP on ebay and fix that mess. !!!!! :soapbox:
(but I'm definitely digging the Williams Bally pinball coindoor  ;D , that's a keeper!)

Some of them came with the Williams pinball coindoor. My friend's Defender that was lost in the fire came with a Black Knight coindoor. Everything in the cab had matching serial numbers and the coin door matched the rest.

For those of us who are stupid and don't have the value of every piece of arcade hardware memorized and just want to relive those memories of being a kid without any quarters, pretending to play the machine, could you just tell us what about the coinbox makes it so remarkable or 'worth a million'?  The guessing games arn't any fun here.

Was just poking a bit of fun at an oddity I had noticed on that particular cab.
Yes, many of the earlier Williams Defenders came with Williams pinball coin doors when they first started cranking them out on the assembly line. The chrome/stainless doors which most of us had seen before and then they went to the generic black coin doors.
But it was odd to not only see a pinball door on this machine...... but a BALLY pinball door.
So it makes we wonder who/why someone had changed it or what the story was behind it being on this machine.
And it is yet another rather important piece that would have to be replaced in order to "restore" this one. Honestly, it looks fine, just not original is all.
Heck, maybe they did use these doors on some of the machines and I'm just not aware of it. But that would make it even that much more unusual and rare of a machine I would think.

Eh, was just something to chew on is all.

Here's one similar to our mystery cab:

But here's 3 with the stencil reversed:

I'm too dumb to figure this one out Kevin, lets just say Ginsu is right and call it a day.   :)

Eh... it's something I learned by sheer accident..... wish I knew the whole story/history behind it. One of the many little things that changed during the assembly line production, but never really got around to finding a particular batch of serial numbers or anything like that.

Here's a couple pics of three machines I had at one time when I noticed it.
What you'll see is that it is not only "reversed", it's actually the same stencil as what what used on the left side. (which is why it appears to just be reversed) The right side stencil on the other two is actually a different stencil all together. The only thing the same is the "Defender" section. You'll also note a totally different shade of paint was used on these "odd" machines. Most people that see this odd one thinks it was repainted or something, I can confirm it was not. And after seeing more of them, I'm convinced they came off the line this way.
There are construction differences too. Some have more plywood and others had more particle wood. I forget which had what now.
Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

Nice. I get it. It looks like at one point, they had two different stencils, one for each side which accounts for our oddball. But at some point they used one stencil for both sides.

This animated gif shows that clearly the middle one has two different stencils while the end ones use one stencil only.

Pretty neat. I bet they were just slapping these together as quickly as possible. If a stencil got messed up and they were able to flip one to get some machines off the line -good enough.

My Bally/Midway cab's crossmembers and stringers are made from chopped up pieces of other Bally cabs.

I don't think its so bad. None of the art hacked, original bezel. All it needs is a control panel and marquee to appear correct.

The thing I can't comprehend is wanting to play any Neo Geo game over Defender.  ;)

Ditto.  The owner could easily "repent" and fix that bad boy up.    ;)
