Plasma discs as MAME cab decor
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:02:23 pm »
I've seen a few projects on here using (or toying with the idea of using) plasma discs on the sides for coolness factor:

Link to what I mean by Plasma Disc

Anyways, the point of this thread is just to point out that they come in small sizes too. I was watching a show about a costume party and one woman had what looked like a 3 inch plasma disc as part of the costume. I always thought they came in 12" or bigger.

Here it is, just 2 3/4" "pocket clip on" format: http://www.blacklight.com/items/cyi2068
Responds to music and touch too!

I got this wacky idea back when my thread was discussing all the different possibilities for using "other" things as trackballs. The best trackball EVER would be one that had that plasma spark action on the INSIDE.

Have no idea how you'd actually do it. I did a LITTLE research and didn't turn up anything.

Best I could come up with was a crystal ball that had intentional interior defects (cracks ,etc) and then shine an RGB led or laser through it to flash off those cracks as the ball was spun.

But I still think it'd look fantastic if there was a way to pull it off.

What a coincidence. Headed to "Sayal", an electronics shop tonight to get some fuse holders and whatta ya know, they had a toy section and one of those small plasma discs like I linked to up there. I bought the last one. I'll post pics and video later.

Not to be a party pooper, but if you used a laser you might damage your eyes.  Yea, it would be cool though!

I'm using a pair of the 10" blue ones in my Space Invader cocktail stools :)

There is more info and build pics to date at the bottom of page one and the top of page two of my [Naomaming] thread if anyone is interested.

I used some small one's on my cab with a space side art so kinda looks like a nebula or something but your idea is cool.

I had an inexpensive one that had a huge EMF field around it.  Touching it gave you a vibrating, almost electric shock sensation.

I don't think they're usually that way though.  But it's something to keep in mind when putting it near electric components.   :dizzy:

Thanks Rayb...didn't realize they came in the much smaller sizes either. Definitely some potential there.
