setting up a mame cab with a vertical monitor.
« on: September 01, 2009, 03:34:18 pm »
hey guys, i need some guidance here.  i am starting to work on the software side of my vertical cabinet, and i'm not sure what the best way to do things is?

i am runniing a 19" CRT PC monitor, probably at 640x480 resolution.  i have an geforece 4 mx440 video card, so i'm fairly certain that the nvidia drivers support rotating the display.  would i be better off rotating the display within windows if possible?

i can make mame rotate the display, that is no problem.  however i noticed that when i do that, if i hit TAB, that menu does not rotate, which is a little weird.  i am assuming that rotating the desktop would fix that...correct?

my problem i am running into is MALA.  i created a new layout, specified that it is a vertical layout.  and when i launch mala and choose it, it comes up sideways on my regular PC.(it would be correct if i had the monitor rotated)..however the snaps are not rotated, which is a problem.   i shouldn't have to manually rotate my snapshots should I?

well, i'm an idiot.  if you right click when in mala, Change Orientation is an option..click that and all is OK.

i'm still thinking it may be better to rotate the entire windows desktop though as well.

how do you guys do this?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

The video card software should have rotation options. (nForce....is that it? I'm an ATI user)

For admin purposes only I use iRotate to rotate Windows so it displays vertically.  Otherwise I tell MaLa to run vertically (if you do both, MaLa will be vertical but in a horizontal orientation which doesn't work).  So every time I need to do some admin work I exit MaLa (the right click exit menu comes up sideways) and then rotate the desktop using ctrl+alt+left arrow and then tinker.  When I'm done I rotate the desktop back.  Not the most elegant solution but I rarely need to do admin stuff and the computer doesn't do anything other than run MAME.

if you rotate using the ingame mame menu the gui will not rotate..

however if you set the game to roate or auto rotate (on vertical games) before loading everything will be orientated correctly.
Anyone got change for a dollar?
