Midway Space Invaders Deluxe Cocktail
« on: August 26, 2009, 11:44:03 pm »
Now this is mostly a done project, I really don't feel the need to make it 100%, but if I can get any help on doing so, that would be great.  I have been referencing this restore in various other posts, but I didn't do any photo documentation.  I don't know why to be honest, but I didn't.  The original condition I got it in was working w/o sound and lots of dings and a few dents.  The glass top was heavily scratched and was a plain black bezel without an kind of underlay art.  The CPs were missing a lot of the silk screened graphics, but were in great shape otherwise.

I replaced the buttons, added the underlay, and got reproduction CPOs, they are not as authentic looking since they are not printed on metal.  But they are not bad, and they were the only ones I could find.  nobody at this time is doing the actually metal silk screened CPs for the cocktail that I can find.  This Old Game says it is on the to do list, but with no ETA at this time.  I'll upgrade them if/when they become available.

I repainted the coin door, and the black all over the cabinet, and that made a huge difference.  I didn't feel the need to fill in the scratches, once painted over, it all looked good enough for me.  Those out there who have heard me about this before know, but for those who don't, I like my arcade games to look like they have seen some action over time.  Not beat to hell, but also not pristine, as my almost 3 year old and 4 year old play on these a lot as well, and I want them to enjoy them and not be worried about Daddy freaking out if they accidentally do damage to them.  As you can see the coin door is missing the bottom frame piece, I didn't even know these could be separated, but I would like to see if I can replace that part.

Getting the sound to work was easy, the speaker wire was not attached, it looked like the speaker had been replaced, and the job was just never finished.  Also the fuse needed to be replaced, and that gave me sound and all the accent lights back in working order.  The UFO sound is not 100% consistant, sometimes it is unheard, sometimes it fades in/out, and sometimes it works perfectly fine.  I know which chip it is, and may replace it in due time.  I am not good at that kind of stuff though.  I do plan on getting a multi game kit, so I can actually have Space Invaders Deluxe on this.  It is the Deluxe cabinet, but the PCB is the original game, so it must have been a replacement at some time.  You can faintly make out a reversed image screen burn of the SID large lettered title screen, so I wonder if the monitor came out of an upright version.  The image is great, and the screen burn is barely noticeable.

Finally I put new T-Molding, top glass, credit button (there was one that was shot already installed on the door,) new easier to reach power switch (inside the coin return,) new glass clips, and cleaned it all up inside and out.  This was in great shape to begin with, but now it really looks sharp.

It did have both the smoked plexi monitor top that I would like to get again, to ease the reflections down.  And the color overlay, but both had what almost looked like a melted burn spot dead center, that really cuts into the gameplay.  I have a few threads about the color overlay, and it looks like that will not be an easy replacement.  If anybody out there has any suggestions or parts available to help with anything I mentioned, please let me know.  Those few things are something that I would like to finish over time if I can.

I am very satisfied with the end results, and can't want to finish my basement so I can have my game room. . .

I know, I don't have an image hosting account, other than here, I don't post my own stuff online.  And I don't want to resize every picture individually for posting, so I just Photoshop a collection to make it easy on me and just one click (two if it fits to screen) for everyone else. . .  so I guess. . . easy for everyone?

Thanks for the positive feedback though, I am very pleased with this restore.  I would love to get those last little things done, but I am 100% fine with this being the end if I never find the rest of what I "need" to do so.  Still, any help/suggestions for my few issues would be greatly appreciated.

It was a lot fun, especially since this was such a classic and in great shape to begin with.  It was fun to find random things like where the PCB came from, it has an ID tag from Cleveland Coin, which is local to me here, so that made me fell more like it belonged here at "home."  And the fact that is seems to have had some various parts replaced, but all still original from 1978-1981.  So some of it is older, same age, and younger than me all at the same time.

I really enjoy the lever control, I have played this game on a leaf and microswitch joystick, not too bad.  I have played it with the buttons for left and right, a little better playing there.  But this lever style control is great, it feels really precise and smooth.  The concept is so easy to understand that both of my girls can play this rather decently.  My 4 year old can get down to like 2 or 3 aliens on the first board.  My high score right now is 3820, not so bad, especially since I haven't spent nearly as much time playing as I have working on it.

I do plan on getting a multi game kit, so I can actually have Space Invaders Deluxe on this.

I hate to dig up an old thread but I'm curious if you ended up getting the multi-game kit?  I'm interested in it but have not found a lot of information about the kit.

i got the exact same cab here in uk,looks like it was from chicago originaly as it has a name branded on the bottom of the cab.if you interested or anyone else i can look and take a pic of the name but,i remember it was chicago,i am in uk by the way.

i actualy have a thread on the go only the last thing i did was put replacement paddle controls on the cps and put the cps back, prob was i am short a few screws and bolts that go on the cp to hold the printed artwork part to the rest of it.mine has the original glass top which i will have a go with and try to paint some of the cracked paint back in,if i get to trickier parts i woill just leave them as is to tyr and conserve it as there aint many midway cocktails with the original art on the glass in uk so i am going to restore and preserve.

i need a cap kit for the linear power supply board but,i ordered one from bobroberts and its been 17 days now and it aint shown up,so i am stuck at the moment as the reset voltage is way too high so i cant realy get this working tiill i got the kit to hopefully get the reset voltage dropped right down.

I see your concerns have already been addressed, but alas I have not yet purchased the kit myself.  It's not that expensive, but convincing The Wife to buy a kit to play games that I already have on my 2 MAME machines is a little tricky.  We have a Disney trip this year for the kids, and that takes priority.  Hopefully one day I will have the kit, I do still want to. . .
