Now this is mostly a done project, I really don't feel the need to make it 100%, but if I can get any help on doing so, that would be great. I have been referencing this restore in various other posts, but I didn't do any photo documentation. I don't know why to be honest, but I didn't. The original condition I got it in was working w/o sound and lots of dings and a few dents. The glass top was heavily scratched and was a plain black bezel without an kind of underlay art. The CPs were missing a lot of the silk screened graphics, but were in great shape otherwise.
I replaced the buttons, added the underlay, and got reproduction CPOs, they are not as authentic looking since they are not printed on metal. But they are not bad, and they were the only ones I could find. nobody at this time is doing the actually metal silk screened CPs for the cocktail that I can find. This Old Game says it is on the to do list, but with no ETA at this time. I'll upgrade them if/when they become available.
I repainted the coin door, and the black all over the cabinet, and that made a huge difference. I didn't feel the need to fill in the scratches, once painted over, it all looked good enough for me. Those out there who have heard me about this before know, but for those who don't, I like my arcade games to look like they have seen some action over time. Not beat to hell, but also not pristine, as my almost 3 year old and 4 year old play on these a lot as well, and I want them to enjoy them and not be worried about Daddy freaking out if they accidentally do damage to them. As you can see the coin door is missing the bottom frame piece, I didn't even know these could be separated, but I would like to see if I can replace that part.
Getting the sound to work was easy, the speaker wire was not attached, it looked like the speaker had been replaced, and the job was just never finished. Also the fuse needed to be replaced, and that gave me sound and all the accent lights back in working order. The UFO sound is not 100% consistant, sometimes it is unheard, sometimes it fades in/out, and sometimes it works perfectly fine. I know which chip it is, and may replace it in due time. I am not good at that kind of stuff though. I do plan on getting a multi game kit, so I can actually have Space Invaders Deluxe on this. It is the Deluxe cabinet, but the PCB is the original game, so it must have been a replacement at some time. You can faintly make out a reversed image screen burn of the SID large lettered title screen, so I wonder if the monitor came out of an upright version. The image is great, and the screen burn is barely noticeable.
Finally I put new T-Molding, top glass, credit button (there was one that was shot already installed on the door,) new easier to reach power switch (inside the coin return,) new glass clips, and cleaned it all up inside and out. This was in great shape to begin with, but now it really looks sharp.
It did have both the smoked plexi monitor top that I would like to get again, to ease the reflections down. And the color overlay, but both had what almost looked like a melted burn spot dead center, that really cuts into the gameplay. I have a few threads about the color overlay, and it looks like that will not be an easy replacement. If anybody out there has any suggestions or parts available to help with anything I mentioned, please let me know. Those few things are something that I would like to finish over time if I can.
I am very satisfied with the end results, and can't want to finish my basement so I can have my game room. . .
