Can't believe everyone still discussing the ---gosh-darn--- insurance. If you read the article linked to WAY UP in the beginning of this thread, the guy SAYS he tried several times to get insurance but was turned down. Insurance companies do whatever is in their favor. That means turning down or charging an arm and leg for what they deem high risk or unclassifiable categories.

I run an online business and just "liability" insurance runs $8000 per year, just to cover the risk of what if some kid gets harassed through our site and the parents sue.

The guy didnt own the place, other relatives did. Let me ask any of you, if you're offered a space like that to live, would you turn it down (considering you can't afford your own house)? I sure as hell wouldn't turn it down. It was probably a real bargain too since its owned by relatives. But seeing as how I wouldn't own the place, I'd just be renting, I wouldn't be spending 5 figures on upgrading it. (When's the last time you upgraded an apartment you didn't own??)

I suggest the critics who are also renters go look at their lease agreements. Chances are it says you need to have apt content insurance, but I bet you don't. Most people don't, and most landlords dont enforce the clause until something happens.

Yeah, once it was said that he couldn't get insurance, even though he tried, that part of the conversation should've been dropped.

We're just trying to help a fellow arcade enthusiast get his life back together.

Thank you Ray..... I was on the verge of not being quite so nice about it.

I run an online business and just "liability" insurance runs $8000 per year

Damn, at those rates I would have assumed there was some sort of liability due to someone possibly going blind or getting an eye poked out.

What a horrible thing to happen, I can't even begin to imagine how I would cope if everything I owned was lost. Donated what I can. Who's next?

HELLO EVERYONE..MY NAME IS TROY..I AM ONE OF THE OWNERS OF THE MACHINES THAT WERE DESTROYED IN THE FIRE THAT THIS THREAD IS ABOUT..FIRST AND FOREMOST I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE HERE THAT HAS DONATED ON BEALHF OF TERRY AND HIS FAMILY..HE IS TRUELY OVERWHELMED WITH PEOPLES GENEROSITY..I WILL TRY TO CLEAR UP SOME THINGS THAT I HAVE READ IN THIS THREAD..NONE AND I MEAN NONE OF THE MONIES THAT HAVE BEEN DONATED TO THEM WHETHER HERE OR LOCALLY IS BEING OR WILL BE USED TO DO ANYTHING BUT TRY TO REBUILD THEIR LIVES..PEOPLE HAVE MADE COMMENTS THAT THEY WERE THINKING THAT THE MONIES WERE GOING TO BE USED TO BUY MACHINES..NOTHING IS FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH..I THINK GINSU VICTIM AND KEVIN MULLINS CAN VOUCH FOR THAT..AS FOR THE INSURANCE ASPECT..THAT IS WHERE IT GETS WEIRD..THE PROBLEM WAS THAT INSURANCE AGENTS COULD NOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO WRITE THE POLICY..(CLASSIFICATION, AND WHAT EVER THE OTHER THINGS ARE THEY LOOK AT)..HE FOUND A COMPANY THAT SAID THEY WOULD WRITE IT AND THEY TOLD HIM TO PUT A HANDRAIL AROUND THE PORCH..AFTER HE DID THAT, THEY CAME OUT AND WANTED SOME CLEAN UP AND CHANGES TO BE MADE IN THE SIDE LOT NEXT TO THE BUILDING..AFTER WE DID THAT THEY CAME OUT ONCE AGAIN AND DECIDED THEY WANTED A ROOM OF THE BUILDING THAT WAS EMPTY AND UNFINISHED TO BE DONE BEFORE THEY WOULD INSURE..AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE WE HAD ABOUT 2 DAYS WORTH OF WORK IN COMPLETING WHAT THEY REQUESTED..IT SEEMED LIKE THEY WERE TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO NOT WRITE THE POLICY.. ALL OF THIS TOOK PLACE OVER THE LAST 6 TO 8 MONTHS..AS FOR SOMEONE LIVING IN A WAREHOUSE..THE CITY IS PUSHING TO REVITALIZE THE DOWNTOWN AND INDUSTRIAL AREA AND ARE ALLOWING PEOPLE TO BUILD APTS, FLATS, HOMES, OR WHAT EVER YOU WANT TO CALL THEM HERE..THERE WAS NO SPRINKLER SYSTEM IN THE BUILDING..IT WAS BUILT IN THE 40'S AND HIS FAMILY HAD OWNED IT SINCE THE 60'S..HE DID HAVE A ALARM SYSTEM WITH SMOKE DETECTORS..WHICH DID NOT NOTIFY ANYONE..(ACCORDING TO THE ALARM COMPANY ITSELF) I WAS DRIVING BY AROUND 4 P.M. AND SAW THE SMOKE COMING FROM THE ROOF..NOT ALOT JUST A LITTLE..I WENT INSIDE AND THE BUILDING WAS NOT SMOKEY AND DID NOT EVEN HAVE THE SMELL OF SMOKE..I BACKED OUT AND CALLED 911..LESS THAN 5 MINUTES LATER IT WAS APPARENT IT WAS GOING TO BE A TOTAL LOSS..THERE WERE MANY ANTIQUES, FAMILY HEIRLOOMS, ETC..THE ARCADE GAMES WERE OWNED BY FOUR DIFFERENT COLLECTORS..THE GAMES (EVEN THOUGH BEING ABOVE AVERAGE AND 95% RESTORED) REALLY DONT MEAN ANYTHING TO ANY OF US RIGHT NOW.. IN THIS SITUTATION WE ARE JUST THANKFUL NO ONE WAS HURT..TERRY AND HIS FAMILY, FIRE FIGHTERS, AND THANK GOD WE WEREN'T HAVING A PARTY AT THE TIME IT HAPPENED..

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND WELL WISHES..

Here is an easier to read version (removed all caps and added paragraph breaks):

hello everyone..my name is Troy.. I am one of the owners of the machines that were destroyed in the fire that this thread is about..first and foremost i would like to thank everyone here that has donated on behalf of terry and his family..he is truly overwhelmed with peoples generosity..i will try to clear up some things that i have read in this thread..none and i mean none of the monies that have been donated to them whether here or locally is being or will be used to do anything but try to rebuild their lives..people have made comments that they were thinking that the monies were going to be used to buy machines..nothing is further from the truth..i think Ginsu Victim and Kevin Mullins can vouch for that.

as for the insurance aspect..that is where it gets weird..the problem was that insurance agents could not figure out how to write the policy..(classification, and what ever the other things are they look at)..he found a company that said they would write it and they told him to put a handrail around the porch..after he did that, they came out and wanted some clean up and changes to be made in the side lot next to the building..after we did that they came out once again and decided they wanted a room of the building that was empty and unfinished to be done before they would insure.

at the time of the fire we had about 2 days worth of work in completing what they requested..it seemed like they were trying to find a way to not write the policy.. all of this took place over the last 6 to 8 months..as for someone living in a warehouse..the city is pushing to revitalize the downtown and industrial area and are allowing people to build apts, flats, homes, or what ever you want to call them here..there was no sprinkler system in the building..it was built in the 40's and his family had owned it since the 60's..he did have a alarm system with smoke detectors..which did not notify anyone..(according to the alarm company itself) i was driving by around 4 p.m. and saw the smoke coming from the roof..not a lot just a little..i went inside and the building was not smokey and did not even have the smell of smoke..i backed out and called 911..less than 5 minutes later it was apparent it was going to be a total loss..there were many antiques, family heirlooms, etc.

the arcade games were owned by four different collectors..the games (even though being above average and 95% restored) really don't mean anything to any of us right now.. in this situation are just thankful no one was hurt..terry and his family, fire fighters, and thank god we weren't having a party at the time it happened..

thank you again for your generosity and well wishes..

Troy

In this particular instance I must say I actually liked the all caps...... brings the attention directly to a relevant post.

I think this pic sums it all up at the moment.

 :applaud:

Heres to everyone on the BYOAC!!

In less than a week ive raised more than $1000 in personal paypal donations.
(that might even be enough money for Terry to get a hair cut!  ;)   )
Thats F*****G awsome! especially since ive never met any of you guys, Im really amazed at peoples kindness.
I wanted to wait until troy posted before I said anything,  but all i really wanted to stress is that this isnt a fund to replace a bunch of old games. Which I think troy made the point allready.

Good things come out of stuff like this, and I am buzzed up, ready to go, the collection will be replaced, the arcade will return and i think Troy and terry will agree that there will be one hell of a party. We'll be back, in the meantime I really do want to thank everyone who has supported this so far, you guys are great!!!

:applaud:  :applaud:  :applaud:  :applaud:

Insurance-wise in a situation like that, you lie about inhabitance if need-be, but he was saying about the collection being an oddity

No, you don't.

It's pretty clear that your experience with women is surpassed only by your experience with insurance.  :dizzy:

Demolition of the property began at 7:00am this past Saturday. Here are some pics:

That last pic is Terry (or his twin brother -- hell, no one can tell 'em apart) holding a smoke detector. The battery still worked. :lol

Donations are still being accepted. Thanks for looking.

While Bricktop was on vacation in Florida....

Today Billy kindly signed a Lawton Game not Over T-Shirt, he even said a few words to Troy on the phone.

Billy is one of the coolest people Ive met, nothing like the person he is made to look like in the 2007 documentary "The King of Kong". Billy even sent me home with some of Ricky's Famous Hot sauce for Terry to check out.. The T-shirt will be mounted and framed and take pride of place above the Pacman machine when the new place is completed. Hopefully Billy will come visit the arcade, have a couple of beers and perhaps even few games of Pacman.

The yellow shirt being signed is Bricktop's, and the white one will go on the wall.

Don't think so.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Wow, you're right. At the time of starting this thread, we hadn't been told the cause, but found out shortly thereafter.

It was a short in a light socket in one of the bedrooms that caused the fire.

Currently, Terry is still trying to get the plans together so he can build a new home on his twin brother's property on the outskirts of town. He is also planning a HUGE arcade and his friends have been doing warehouse raids to get machines for it (keep in mind, he wasn't the only one to lose machines in the fire -- there were at least three other people who had games there and they want to rebuild as much as anyone). He has had a tough time and immensely appreciated the outpouring of help from the community. Slowly but surely, he is getting back on his feet and moving on with his life.

Donations are still welcome. :)

One year anniversary (as of yesterday) bump!

The blog is still going at http://phoenixarcade.blogspot.com

The new house is being built, meanwhile in a separate location, the games are being gathered and stored for the future arcade.

Thanks again to all those who have helped and for your kind words over the last year.
