u360 monitor magnetization
« on: June 27, 2009, 12:37:02 am »
i've built a pacman/midway style cocktail cab and have mounted u360s on each side.  Maybe this is a basic question, but the joysticks are causing magnetization on the monitor corners.  What is the best way to shield the monitor from the joysticks?

I have degaussed the monitor, but it doesn't help.  And moving the joysticks causes the magnetization to affect the screen.

any ideas?

thanks!

Never heard of this problem... those sticks must be close to the monitor edge. You could try a bodge of wrapping the joystick case in tin foil. The U360 base is a nice square shape. Should be easy to wrap something round that. Sorry to be not much help but this bodge might just work. You needs something to shield the magnetic field from affecting the screen. Those U360 magnets can't be that strong. Shouldn't need much to shield them.

What type of monitor are you using? Some dont like to be mounted inverted. :(

This is a section from the Ultimarc website.

Magnet Issues: Will my monitor be affected?
The UltraStik 360 contains a magnet (a Neodymium Iron Boron Radially Polarised Magnet to be exact!). We have done extensive testing and have found no problems with monitor screens being discoloured by the magnet in the UltraStik, provided the joystick is mounted at a "normal" distance from the screen in an upright cabinet. The only possible exception might be in small cocktail tables where the joystick is practically touching the monitor tube. We will be investigating a shielded version for this case. Note that it is not possible to permanently damage a monitor by the presence of a magnet.

We did produce some shields for these in case anyone found this to be a problem but nobody has. If you are sure it is the U360 causing this, you could try one. Drop me an email

Thanks Andy..and everyone who has replied.  It definitely is the joystick.  I can tell because when i move it around, it causes discoloration.  The monitor is a Optiquest 95 (viewsonic) and it is ok with being mounted like that.  I'll send Andy an email an update this thread with any news...
