Steel Worker Poll
« on: June 19, 2009, 03:22:16 pm »
After a couple weeks of holding our collective breaths it was revealed that STEEL WORKER was the super-secret / super-expensive rare arcade PCB that the folks are the Dumping Project recently acquired.   STEEL WORKER,  evidently,  is a Taito game that uses similar hardware as Space Invaders.

Personally,  I was a bit underwhelmed when I found out the game they acquired.  I was hoping for something like Bouncer.  I guess I was just a bit anti-climatic for me to see a boring ass Space Invaders hardward game...

But that's just me.

I'm glad for history's sake that it has been dumped, but I care nothing about the game itself. It's rare that I enjoy anything on that hardware.

I don't know, it looks like it might be interesting.  When you said Space Invaders, I was thinking just another sucky shooting gallery game...woot?  The flyer looks kinda cool.

At least isn't another Mahjong game.  :dunno

Frankly, I'm happy to see stuff like this, as opposed to the ridiculous stuff that the masses scream for so that they can play their favourite game (which they couldn't be bothered to go out to the arcade and play in the first place) on their stupid Tanksticks.

But, then, I'm just a grumpy old man ...

Have you Played the game?

Its pretty interesting.  A sort of Pre-Lemming's game..  except there is only one
lemming... and they do not always give you all the pieces you would need to
'easily' create the bridge.  That and the little man starts to get pretty hasty after a
few rounds.

Rare games do not necessarily mean Great games.  If they were great.. it would
more than likely have led to huge sales of the game.   Its much more rare to see
a  "Sleeper"   arcade game,  than to see a console sleeper.

Bouncer would be great.. But, there is probably only 1 working board out there.. and
to acquire it would probably take every BYOAC member a  +$7000  donation.
And even If we get it... there is no telling how good it really is.  Its probably not
even worth the money it would take to get it.  But then again... thats the nature of
Rare games.

We (some of us) value these rare games, partly because we have not experienced
them yet... and partly because its a great cause.   To preserve history.  Our favorite
kind of history:  Electronic games.

MM2 isnt Mame dumped (AFAIK), and from looking at the videos of the gameplay...
its horrible.   The original looks better graphically (better contrast shading - so looks more
3d)   and has better overall gameplay.

SteelWorker is far better a score than something like a crappy street fighter
clone done poor as hell.

Because you are so underwhelmed by the ultra rare title that was dumped...
(which most Japanese collectors were keeping away from Mame intentionally,
making it an extremely difficult to acquire game...)

Im wondering when you are going to organize and buy rare games for us all...  And do it better than the people already in charge?

Did you even contribute to the dumping for any mame roms?
Let alone helped the mame team in any way, shape ,or form?

I've never heard of it before, but it looks like an interesting game. I always liked Lemmings (played that ALOT on the Amiga), so a game with a similar concept would be fun.
Although I'm still hoping some day that Crazy Junior (Falcon's version of Donkey Kong Junior) gets dumped. Only ever saw that one once back in the early 80's at a truck stop.

Quick question.... why would the Japanese deliberately keep an old title like that away from Mame? It's not like Mame isn't available world wide. Or am I missing something screamingly obvious?

I'm not familiar with the game, but I think its cool. I'll try playing pretty much anything, and I'm often entertained by horrible games. I still play Logger all the time, mainly because I think it might be the worst arcade game ever made.  ;D

I remember my local sports centre getting Logger in.  At the time I was heavily into Donkey Kong and I'd dabbled in other arcade classics like Pacman etc. But I couldn't get anywhere on Logger (of course!) and I remember thinking to myself... "am I just sh!t or is this game total bollocks?"  I figured I was just sh!t and persevered... mainly because the other arcade games I'd busied myself with were confirmed classics already. And surely nobody could release a dog now?!

LOL!

There are arcade "purists" who absolutely despise MAME and all it stands for.

THEY'RE the issue...

Well that is one way to make the value of something go up, make it scarce. I suppose if that sort of collector thinks that keeping the game from being dumped, they have increased the rareness of the game as it is ONLY available in hardware form.

Yeah... I'd love to see CKJr... I've read about it,  but never seen it.  Do you remember if it was a close port or if it was sort of a "beta" port as CK appears to be?

Keep in mind I'm going from a memory that's 25 years old, but I believe it was a copy just like Crazy Kong. This part I'm sure of, it had the level order like the Japanese DK Jr ROMS, so the 2nd board was Mario's Hideout (which was the first time I actually saw that board). This part I'm not so sure of, but I seem to remember the colors being more red (similiar to how CK has different colors than DK), and also similar sounds as CK, probably using Crazy Climber sound hardware again, like CK did.
