Refinishing an old cabinet (Paint, adhesive remover, etc.)
« on: July 07, 2003, 11:39:13 am »
As some of you might know, I have an old Dynamo JAMMA cabinet that I am building into a MAME cab. The game that was in there was a crappy boxing game, "Final Blow." I pulled the old side-art off, which left a gummy mess in some areas.

I bought some goof-off, which removed some of the adhesive and some of the paint where I was getting the adhesive off. I'm pretty much thinking that I am going to just repaint the entire cabinet.

My questions are:

1) Anyone use wood putty to fix any imperfections in their cabinets? How does it hold up in MDF?
2) What sort of paint should I use? I will be rolling it on. Should I go for a gloss, semi-gloss, or flat? I'm going to paint it black.

I am getting side art done by Emdkay, so whatever I get will have to allow me to use some spray ahdesive to put the art on.

Wood putty works well to fix small imperfections.  It sometimes helps to moisten the raw surface where it is being applied.  It can be sanded very easily.

I like semi-gloss latex.   Cleans well and does not show imperfections as much as gloss.

Flat will show every mark and dust particle and is not easy to clean.

wood putty is easy to use and is good....

just when you're putting on... try not to put too much...
just flat is good.... or else, you'll have a little lump.. (or bump) or whatever you want to call it... and that will be hard to sand down to flat....

as for paint.... I would see flat black is just cool looking....
(but my experience with paint is limited...) you should do a search... there are quite a few threads in this main forum discussing about paints.... (and their effects) in details....

I remember its been asked before....
