That's pretty much how I remember it. Also, he didn't talk to Steve during his game because he was PLAYING A GAME. People would've been questioning why he was trying to disrupt Steve's game.
Yeah, I think it was pretty much that.  Billy said hi, asked how he was going, then moved on so as not to distract him.  I read an interview where he explains what was edited (and the editing is clear when you rewatch the footage).  He also avoids slandering the director (imo), but points out some things that put them in a pretty bad light.  For example, they made it look like some big battle between Steve and Billy for the high score, but Steve took the title from Timothy Sczerby who had held it for years.  Billy wasn't the reigning champion.  The movie conveniently neglects to point this out, and tries to turn Billy into a villain.  It makes for a more entertaining movie, and sure he's a character, but he's not that bad.

In the end, a documentary is still a MOVIE, not a news report, and thus is made more to entertain then to inform.  There will always be exaggeration, distortion, and convenient editing to further the drama of the story the director is trying to tell.  This is why I don't take anything Michael Moore does seriously.

Quote
It all started one day when Steve finished a game of Donkey Kong at the local arcade and put another quarter in to play a second game, even though Billy had CLEARLY put his quarter on the dashboard, indicating it was his turn next. Steve clearly violated arcade etiquette and the price he paid was Billy's friendship. From that day forward, the pain curdled Billy's heart and his existence became a treatise in revenge, written in pixels and coin.

Heh, in 1982, I was 12 years old, playing Popeye at the local hole-in-the-wall arcade, and some 18-year-old dude came up and put a quarter on the edge of the monitor glass.  I thought he just wanted to see me continue since I was doing so well, so I took the quarter, dropped it in and...it almost turned into a real life version of Popeye vs Bluto, with no spinach can in sight.   :-[

That's when I learned...you don't do dat!

That just strikes me as odd. I mean, why would he not be offering his quarter to you? I dunno, maybe this story is similar: we were at Chuck E's one Saturday night and the place was balls to the wall ---smurfing--- packed, so my dad negotiated sharing a booth with some other dude and his kid(s). Well, their pizza came first, and I was ---smurfing--- starving....so after a spell, I reached over to grab a piece....and he lightly slapped my hand!  I didn't get it.  Brains, I tell ya, go south at times.

I got confused by the pronouns. Did your dad slap your hand, or the other guy?

If your dad, I can totally understand. I'd tell my theoretical kid hands off unless it's offered. But if it's the other guy...well, that's a little weird. If I were in the other guy's spot, I'd totally let the starving kid have a slice of pizza. :P
