help needed with fan wiring [SOLVED!]
« on: June 01, 2009, 05:09:30 pm »
Hey guys!

I'm in the process of building a mame cabinet (WIP page coming soon) and I'm trying to reuse as much as the original setup/cabinet as possible. It's an old M.A.C.H. 3 cabinet, I was fortunate to pick it up for only 40 bucks. Anyways, there's two fans that I would like to use except that they have a goofy 2 pin power connector. I took two pictures of it and included it in the attachments. In case anyone can't make it out, one of the holes is a square and the other is a circle shape. I've been searching for a way to hook them up, but the only thing I can find is that Happ sells the connector (the white plastic casing you can see in the picture) for the fans. I can't find anything relating to it. I assume that one of the pins is ground... but I'm not sure what the other would be (5v, 7v, 12v?). I apologize if this is a noobish question but I was wondering if anyone has dealt with this before. It seems like there would be a simple way to do this, but it's escaping me at the moment. Splitting a power supply line possibly? Any help would be much appreciated!

EDIT: Forgot to include the Happ product page: http://www.happcontrols.com/electrical_supplies/43053600.htm
It's the top 2 pin male connector

Remove the fan guard and see if this is a 12v DC or 120v AC fan. It is very probably a 120v AC fan with those wire gauges and you should be able to splice an old lamp cord onto those existing wires and plug it into a socket and be OK. No specific polarity with AC.

The voltage rating should be on the back of the fan motor.
(Maybe under the finger guard?)
Anyway, black is most likely negative, or ground, and the other wire is positive or +.
I would cut the plug off and wire it with wirenuts or twist wires together and cover with heat shrink.

Connect the two fans together, black to black and other to other. (This is called paralleled.)

If they are 5 volt fans, the black wire would connect to PC power supply black (or ground).
The other wire would connect to power supply red.

If they are 12 volt fans then black to ground and other to yellow.

If they are 7 volts, Im not sure you can connect then to the power supply, but you may be able to connect fan black to PS yellow and fan other to PS red.

Looks like thecheat beat me to the punch, but I agree with him that they could be 120 VAC, which IMHO, is much better. No extra load on the PC power supply that way.

Plus, IMHO, 120v fans are built MUCH better than 12v ones. This thing probably needs the filth brushed off of it and will fire right up.

Wow thanks for the responses! Yeah I cleaned and checked it.. it's a 120v fan. That was easy one of the most dirtiest things I've ever cleaned. So I guess I just take an old AC cord and connect each wire? I'll give it a shot tonight.

Wired it up using an electrical cord I had lying around and some wire nuts... worked like a charm! Unforunately I accidentally touched the wires with the power still on (stupid me) and shorted out the fuse, but no real harm done  :)

Good thing the fan (and you) are still working!
