Arcade Convention in California
« on: May 26, 2009, 07:22:04 pm »
Hello everyone,

I am starting to put together an arcade convention to take place over a weekend (date to be determined) in Southern Califonia later this year,  and I am looking for anyone interested in contributing to the project.

I am still in the early stages of development, but I am looking for sponsors, ideas, helpers, vendors, collectors, technicians, and anyone else that has a passion for arcade gaming.

It is looking to be a 2 day event that include:

Seminars- from business to technical info to fabrication/repair/restoration, and even monitors!

Sales- from National vendors to private sellers

Trading- to help the cause

Competitions- mandatory!

Presentations - Upcoming games, new technology

Auction - From classic games to new games

Please let me know if this sounds like something you might be interested in.

I am open to ideas, and I look forward to hearing from everyone.

Thanks in Advance!

-JC

Even though it's SoCal, you may have competition or something with California Extreme in July I think it is.

My thought as well. It's as if the guy never heard of CAX. Sorry pal, someone beat you to it, by oh, over a decade?

Thanks Ummon, I looked into that, and although very similar, I would look to take it into a different direction. With it coming up so soon, Ill have to go check it out and do some research.

RayB, why the condescending reply?

Because you're facing an uphill battle considering that CAX is already established and popular enough that people travel from across the country to attend. You might also piss them off.

I guess it's all in the scheduling.

Hnh, I hadn't thought about them getting uppity about it. But, yeah BO (hahahahahah, oh god, it's one of those days), good idea there.

I think the uphill battle is really that you're basically talking about a trade show, for an industry that has been on its last leg for some time now.  I'd personally be more interested in looking at/playing/trading old games than attending seminars about the latest dance/drum/guitar game, and from what I hear CA Extreme has that covered pretty well.

But given the choice, I would rather go to a CAX type event closer to home, which for me happens to be SoCal.

Cali already has a show... CAX.  That said,  if you wanted to put something together similar (but smaller scale likely) in So. Cal,  I'd go for the winter months... why?  Because CAX has the summer months locked up.  It's not like So. Cal gets extreme weather all too often so a January or Febuary (hell March even) show date wouldn't be difficult.

California is a big enough state that can handle more than 1 show.  As far as a trade show goes that is gonna be tough.  I would aim for a smaller venue with people bringing their cabs or whatever to sell or trade.  Maybe showcase some mame cabs and let people see how they are made..  I would drag mine in.

Well, CGE looks like it's a bit on the rocks - http://www.cgexpo.com/  .  Maybe you want to sort of take up the reins.  And, yeah, SoCal would be A LOT closer for me, too.

+1 support that CA is a big state & often has redundant shows/conferences/etc on the north side & south side.  I have yet to attend a game-related event "up north" because I can't justify taking a vacation just for games...but day trips in SoCal are just what the doctor ordered.

Thanks,
-Jason

No, silly. If he wants it to be more of a trade show, then since CGE is apparently in trouble, maybe his show could fill the void.
