How to install a joystick?
« on: June 07, 2009, 06:38:53 pm »
How do you install a joystick in a control panel? Are you supposed to cut a whole big enough for the red ball to fit through? I bought the 4-8 way switchable joystick off of jammaboards.com I don't understand how these are installed.

The best way to do it is actually to cut a hole small enough for the shaft to go through, then cut the control panel in half right through the center of that hole.  Reattach the two halves of the control panel around the joystick shaft and you're good to go.

Use lots of glue.

i'm not familiar with that specific stick, but usually, the balltop either unscrews from the shaft, or you pop off an E-clip from the bottom of the shaft, and pull the whole shaft out of the stick.  i used the same bit i use to drill my button holes. (1 1/8")

I took a look at their joystick on the jammaboards.com website.  Since it's a 4 / 8 way joystick, it uses an actuator that you flip over underneath to make it 4 or 8 way.  In order to flip it over you need to remove the e-clip at the bottom of the metal shaft of the joystick itself.  You would do the same to install it onto a control panel.  Flip it upside down and you will see it.  Use a small flat head screwdriver to pry it off.

It will look something like this when taken off:

Then simply pull the joystick out from the base from the top.  Be sure to note where everything is while you pull it out for reassembly.  Then install the base, and simply put the joystick back in and secure it with the e-clip again.

P.S. - Obviously you can ignore that comment made about cutting the control panel in half.  Not many people realize that they were once a newbie and they should treat others with the same respect.  We welcome newbies and the majority of us are all happy to help.

I noticed when I was popping off my e-clips that it was really quite snug and tight a fit. I was worried that I was going to break the clip and/or joystick. But don't worry - the clips are surprisingly tough.

Actually, I really liked PDB's response ... it was more original than the traditional "do a search", and obvious enough not to do any harm.

FWIW, I always at least try to use needlenose pliers to remove e-clips ... otherwise they end up shooting off and ending up in heating vents and other places that make them a challenge to find and remove.

If nothing else, pop the clip off in a bag or a shoe box. They do go flying when they get the chance.

Why wouldn't he ignore it?  It was clearly a harmless joke as the first reply actually did answer the question (at least one of the two possible answers).  Plus, I'm betting the joystick will come with an exploded diagram, and its quite obvious once you look at a joystick how the shaft comes apart.

Give me a break with the "majority of us" baloney.  I swear everyone on this forum has gotten so sensitive over the past year or so.
