I originally posted this under the software category, but got no responses.

Was hoping someone over here might be able to help.
The default to save or load a game in mame is F7 and Shift F7. I changed this so I could use my joystick/buttons. But after you initiate a save or load you then have to "select position to load/save from" but then I have to use a number key from the keyboard, which kind of defeats the purpose of using the joystick/buttons to save/load.
Is there a way to "select position to load/save from" using the joystick/buttons?

I don't know of a way around this, but I already have keys 1-8 mapped to my control panel for P1-P4 coins & starts, so those are easily accessible (and relatively easy to remember & use for this purpose).

Thanks for the advice, dungbeetle. But I am a little unclear by your answer. How will mapping the save locations to z x c v help me to save to the choose a save location from the joystick/buttons?

zxcv are buttons 5678, if you only have 4 buttons then no it doesnt help but if you have six buttons then you can save and load from z and x, I have 6 buttons plus 2 for pinball which gives me zxcv.
cheers
