SlikStik News (SlikStik Arcade Machine Coming Soon!)
« on: June 29, 2003, 12:45:22 pm »
FYI,

This post was originally in reply to the topic (Do any of you guys build these cab's to sell?) but we wanted to post it in a new topic for all to see...

We will be releasing a SlikStik arcade machine very soon. Some of the features are:

Classic arcade design.
Intergraded Cam Outrigger locking system.
Custom flush mount hid-away push unlock/push lock keyboard tray.
Made to fit the Wells Gardner D9200 monitor (Can also fit just about any 27" monitor).
Custom made angle brackets for that monitor.

Things that will be included, Happ Over/Under coin door with working mechs, Happ Monitor bezel, top and bottom Marquee holder.

The SlikStik Cab will be covered in and out with black finish. Also, it will fit new and existing SlikStiks in addition to any control panel.

Photos will be released soon!

The pricing has not been set yet, but will be inline with what the market is calling for.

Custom flush mount hid-away push unlock/push lock keyboard tray.

Why are so many people obsessed with keyboard trays?  Mame cabs should be designed and built to work like real arcade cabs (ie - turn it on and play games - not turn it on and type on a pc).

Unfortunately, a necessary evil for maintenance and some PC games.  I don't have one, but I'm thinking of adding one.  Right now, I open the coin door and plug in a USB keyboard when I need one; when I rebuild my panel, I'll probably attach a USB hub to the bottom of it so I don't have to open the coin door all the time...

It'd be nice if internet cabinet builders would stop thinking about classic arcade design and do something more practical. A light, compact cabinet with some assembly required would be a far more intelligent prospect for sale over the internet.

very true...
i would probably buy a bartop online or a mini half cab or something just cuz it'd be neat to have one, lol... it'd cost a lot less than a regular size too... plus for regular size you can buy them cheaper from an arcade op and restore one how you want i to look

I don't mean to keep harping on about Jap cabinets but they tend to make alot more sense than the huge American behemoths that are so popular.

Astro City cab:
Width:29.5" x Depth:35.6" x Heigth:57"

Now I've had a good look around for the dimensions of an equivalent American cabinet with a 29" monitor but I can't find one right at the moment. My guess is it would be a hell of alot bigger.

I think if someone could mass produce small cabinets that would sell for less than a $1000 shipped I could see them being a success. Perhaps the bottom half could fold in on itself so that the entire machine would dissemble to about the size of the monitor.

But classic designs just won't cut it. They cost too much to ship halfway across the US and could be picked up very cheap locally.

most premade arcade cabs are 999 dollars or more ... lol whats the point, pick up a used one from an arcade op and do it yourself, cost me 40 bucks, what more could you want? lol saved 900 dollars i didn't have...
why would i pay the same price for a smaller less sturdy cab...theres a reason arcade cabs are made the way they are...i don't care about all that small efficient crap (only said crap since I can't say what I wanted to say because censoring is terrible, lol) if you want one so bad, just go import one yourself or build one somehow...

pretty much the same thing with cars tho, big, small, domestic, import, it's all a matter of choice and individual preferance

Gee, Spectre, tell us how you really feel!  ;)

Not everyone can find a cab that easily, and even if they did a lot of people out there are not that skilled with powertools, and even those who are skilled may be more concerned with just "playing games" than building a cab.

I actually had more fun building my cab that I've had playing on it, and I suspect the same is true of most who visit here. That said, I doubt we're in the majority of the gaming population.

Time = Money. I don't knock those who want to save money and DIY, nor those who would rather save time and buy it instead. Heck, it's their money/time to spend as they see fit.

Personally, I'm glad we're getting all of these choices -- used to be you had to DIY!

As usual people who BYOAC don't want a complete cab but is sure is nice to see another one available from a reputable source.  There are lots of guys who make a significant amount of dough who do not mow their own grass and probably don't have the inclination to build their own cab.  But make a nice looking one available and they will buy it to put next to their pinball machine and whurlizer bubbler juke.  Hanaho sells a significant number of theirs and it is good to see Slikstik get into the game.

I got my used cab from a small used car/junk lot.  My wife asked me if I was still looking for one because we had just passed a store/carlot with an arcade machine with a 50 dollar sign on it.  She has better eye sight then me and saw it on the side of the road while I was trying to watch traffic.

A fast U turn and the guys on the lot helped me load it into the back of my van and it came home with us that evening.   New project will be documented as soon as it progresses significantly.

Personally, I think paying $999 for an empty cabinet is totally ridiculous. WTF is that? Gimmie a break.

I hope that these cabinets are far better priced.

You might get a few sales at the $1k price, but its better to do volume. Sell them for $400, and sell 10 times as many. that's the way to do business.

Best of luck with your project SlikStik.

BAH !
$400 is too cheap..I will gladly pay $500 for a decent looking cab but thats it.
$1000 for the cab would be reasonable if it came WITH a slick stick control panel.
but thats just me...there are folks okay paying $4000 for a cab and never even getting the cab(remembe arcadeshopper...like that ;))

Slickstick stuff does look slick but still...$1000 just for the cab then shipping would be over kill.

Snaaaake do you ACTUALLY know the resolution to the arcadeshopper "incident"?  Do you know whether that guy got his cab or not?  All I saw was the original flurry of posts and the ArcadeShopper guy responding on the mame.net forums that it was ready to ship --> but i never heard another word outa either of them.  *Shrug*  What that has to do with the new slik stik offering I dunno...

Maybe a better comparison if you want to show that it's a bargain without bring up old dirt incomprehensibly, is to compare it to say... http://www.custom-arcade.com/ at $4995 *shrug*

NO,I was just sayin.
How the guy actually paid like $4000 for a cab..that means there IS market but not around here. :P
He gave me half the money and I would gladly build a complete machine no problem ;D.
my point was that EVEN if the slikstick arcade cost like $1000 for the cab alone then people would still buy.
Considering it DOES(will..no?) look like an actual arcade machine unlike that POS x-arcade sells for $1000.  :P

Comparison ? ?
Yeah thats what I meant but wasn't a good one !  :P

BobA

Precisely.  Been lurking for a few weeks, saw  this and decided to take the plunge.  I suppose that I could take the time to learn the woodworking skills necessary for the construction/conversion of a cab.  But, frankly, I would rather spend the time doing something else.  So, my 'project' will consist of collecting
pre-fab components (ordered a slikstik already, the WG9200 is a self-contained
unit, etc) and putting them together.  Sure, it costs more than building from scratch.  Maybe even a lot more.  But, that's what my time is worth.

One final comment that I think it worth mentioning, and I make this without having seen the specifics on these cab's so I may be wrong.  If this assembly is based
primarily on camshafts with some angle brackets for support then this solves
the doorway problem.  I have seen several posts about not getting real arcade
machines though a door, and thus having to sell them.

Camshafts can be locked and unlocked with no damage to the wood. The screws
for the angle brackets may be another story, have to see the end product, but
some 'pre-fab furniture' uses either bolts and nuts, or screws into something solid.  If this is the case, then this cab would be able to leave via almost any door
via the process of disassembly.  In fact, it may be the more stable way to transport in the case of a move.  It is certainly the better way to transport pre-fab furniture.

In short, while slikstik and their new cab may not be the answer for everyone, but it looks like it may solve some annoyances for some of us.  Looking forward
for the details.

Hint, hint...there's another pic of the new DIY cabinet (with a mounted D9200 monitor and SlikStik) on my new Retroblast site:

(Note that the speaker holes at the top are wrong - apparently this was the first full production prototype, and the holes have since been moved further apart.)

A door for the keyboard?  Yuck.  That's so tacky on an "Arcade" machine.  Yes, I understand the utility but I wouldn't take the hood off of my car because it makes changing the spark plugs easier.  Some things just look wrong.  Uh oh, here comes the "keyboard drawer" MAMEers ready to attack :)

As for cabinet size- I'm building another Mame cabinet because moving my Aliens cabinet is a Beoch!  Plus, it's like 6 inches taller than a standard doorway and must weigh 400 pounds without a monitor.  This next cabinet will be shorter and wheels are a must!  Military moves me too much and I'm gonna drop a ball out on the floor next time I move it!  :o

Matt,

Did you look at the pic of the cab? If you didn't know there was a keyboard drawer there, you wouldn't even notice it!

SlikStik's the first maker to really get the keyboard drawer "right", IMHO. It's small, well concealed, and doesn't have any handles or knobs or other hardware that ruins the smooth lines of the front of the cab.

It's one of those "push-click" open jobs, and as long as you don't pop it open by accidently jamming into it during a heated arcade session, I think it's probably the best way to go.

As always, YMMV  ;)

It is concealed very well.  Take back HALF of what I said!  ;)   Guess it would just bother me then to "know" there's a drawer with a keyboard there.  Shoot, guess it bothers me to know there's a PC in that MDF box too!  I quit!

So, I'm a little lost... is this the cabinet they are going to sell, or is it based on the plans...have you done a hostile takeover and now are ceo of slikstik?  ;)

Nope, no hostile takeover - I don't even have the cab yet!

The cabinet picture on my site is a pic that Christian emailed me. It's the first "test model" that he had produced, and he mentioned that the speaker holes had been fixed after the picture.

I'm going to be writing the installation manual (and video!) for the cabinet, and my payment is going to be that I get to keep the cab he sends me to write the manual.

My "MAMEframe II" cabinet will be based on the SlikStik DIY, with a slightly modified custom SlikStik Classic CP, and a Wells-Gardner D9200 arcade monitor (which is shown installed in the picture on my site).

What you see is what the new DIY cab will look like (well, the pic that Christian posted has the correct speaker hole positions, but other than that...)

Kevin
I haven't seen what the cabinet looks like, but I'm supposed to get the first unit off the production line, so to speak.
